Baseball Scores Eight Unanswered Runs to Defeat Merrimack

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (March 5, 2017) – The Molloy baseball team scored eight unanswered runs en route to an 8-2 victory over the Merrimack College Warriors Sunday afternoon at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex. The Lions improved to 2-7 overall in the win.

The Warriors (3-4) opened the scoring in the top of the second, junior Matt Nicholson (Rockland, Mass.) hit a solo home run to center field to make it 1-0.

Merrimack increased its lead to 2-0 in the third inning. Second baseman Cam DiSarcina (Shirley, Mass) doubled to left field to score Ryan Petrone (Leicester, Mass.).

The Lions started to comeback in the fifth inning. Third baseman Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) singled to score catcher Ryan Dillon (Medford, N.Y.).

Molloy struck again in the sixth inning. Dillon singled to right to score center fielder Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) to knot the score at two. Right fielder Austin Nieves (Glendale, N.Y.) drilled a triple to right field to score Dillon and give the home team a 3-2 edge.

The maroon and white added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Designed hitter Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.

The Lions then put the game away in the eighth inning. Left fielder Jake Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch to give Molloy a 5-2 advantage. Second baseman Matthew Imbrogno (Wantagh, N.Y.) tripled to score Nieves. Then, shortstop Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) singled to bring home Imbrogno. Murphy capped the rally after he stole second and scored on a throwing error, which made it 8-2.

Sophomore Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) pitched seven innings, gave up two runs on four hits, and struck out seven batters to record his first victory of the season. Redshirt junior Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y.) allowed one hit and struck out two batters, in two innings of work, to pick up his first save of the season.

Molloy returns to action Friday (Mar.10) when it heads to Florida to play in the Lynn Invitational. The Lions will play Bloomfield in their first game of the tournament.
