ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 4, 2017) – Senior
Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) scored a career-high 42 points to set the scoring mark for the most points in a single game in Molloy College history in the Lions' 92-78 win over the Mavericks of Mercy College. Morris went 18-of-24 (75%) from the field, adding eight rebounds, three blocks, three steals, and an assist in the effort.
Freshman
Nick Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.) posted 12 points with three assists, while seniors
Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) and
Mike Guzzardi (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) as well as sophomore
Curtis Jenkins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) all added 10 points. As a team, the maroon and white shot 65.1% from the field with nearly 70% of their points coming from within the paint.
In the early minutes, the Lions found themselves down 8-3 before erupting to a 14-2 run, including 10 from Morris. Amir Atkins (Alexandria, Va.)hit a three-pointer with 13:25 left in the opening half to come within two points, but that was as close as the Mavericks would get for the remainder of the contest. The first half concluded with Molloy up 49-39 and 22 points for Morris.
The maroon and white opened the second half on a 17-9 run to go up by as much as 18 points, 66-48. Ryan Hickey (Smithtown, N.Y.) and William Robinson (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) combined to pull Mercy within 10 points with 11 minutes remaining in the game, but Molloy answered back with eight points from Morris and Corbett. With 6:01 left in the game, Morris put up a layup for his 40
th point of the contest, breaking the single-game record of 39 points set by
John Petrucelli in the 2013-14 season.
The Mavericks responded with a 12-0 run to come within nine points with 3:55 left to play. Morris, Corbett, and Guzzardi each nailed field goals to set the score at 90-75 in the final two minutes of action. Mercy closed the contest with three of the last five points, but was unable to overcome the explosive Molloy offense. The Lions now move to 13-9 on the season and 9-4 in league play, while the loss dropped the Mavericks to 2-20 (0-13 ECC).
The Lions are set to face off on the road against the University of Bridgeport on Saturday (Feb. 11) at 3:00 p.m.
