Corbett Posts Career-High in Loss to Bridgeport, 90-79

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Feb. 11, 2017) - Despite a career-high 29 points from freshman Nick Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.), the Molloy men's basketball team fell 90-79 at the University of Bridgeport on Saturday (Feb. 11). The Lions now sit at 13-10 on the season and 9-5 in East Coast Conference action.

The maroon and white started down early, trailing 15-8 in the opening minutes of play. The Lions responded with a 9-0 run, featuring five points from senior Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) to go up 17-15. The Purple Knights exploded with a 17-5 run of their own, as Carlos DeJesus (Bronx, N.Y.) netted eight points. Morris and Corbett combined for seven points to tie the contest, but a three-pointer from Stefano Osuji (Voorhees, N.J.) quickly put UB back ahead. The opening half would close with Molloy trailing 39-35.

The Lions opened the second half with a 13-8 run to cut the lead to only one point, but the Purple Knights continued their success from behind the arc and increase the deficit to eight points with 14 minutes left to play. In the following minutes, Molloy would come within five points on three occasions, but that was as close as the Bridgeport defense would allow, ultimately falling 90-79.

Corbett's 29 points came after going 12-of-19 (63.1%) from the field. The point guard also hit a game-high four three-pointers while picking up four assists, one block, and two steals. Morris finished with 15 points, going 7-of-15 from the field. Sophomore Curtis Jenkins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) added 14 points, five helpers, and a game-high six steals. Sophomore Mike Torre (Massapequa, N.Y.) also finished in double-digits for the Lions, totaling 10 points in the effort.

The Lions will return to the court on Wednesday (Feb. 15) as they host New York Institute of Technology at Quealy Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Molloy Athletics will be celebrating the 20 student-athletes who achieved a 4.0 for the Fall 2016 semester in a pre-game ceremony.
