Baseball Concludes Northeast Challenge with Win Against Concordia, 9-2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 26, 2017) – The Molloy baseball team picked up its first win of the season, 9-2 over Concordia, in the final day of the Northeast Challenge at Ripkin Griffith Field. Senior Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y.) got the start and the win, striking out eight batters in seven innings of work and improved to 1-0 on the campaign.

The Lions got things started early, as senior Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) led off with a double through the left side. He was brought home to give Molloy the 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to center field by junior Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.). Concordia tied the game up in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from German Dilone (Bronx, N.Y.). In the next inning, the Clippers jumped ahead by one run as Eric Roubal (Patchogue, N.Y.) hit into a run-scoring fielder's choice.

Molloy reclaimed their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) walked, and advanced to second on a single from Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.). Reigning East Coast Conference Player of the Week Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.) brought the seniors home with a double to center field. The Lions extended their lead in the fifth inning, as Ragn singled to score senior Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.). Alberghina sent a two-run home run in the next at-bat to put the maroon and white up 7-2. The Lions' final two runs of the game came from Ryan Hensley (Franklin Square, N.Y.), who walked to score Rahn in the seventh before reaching on an error to score the senior in the ninth.

On the day, Alberghina went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a home run, and a stolen base. Rahn scored four runs, going 1-for-2 with three walks and a stolen base.

Molloy returns to play as they welcome the Warriors to Merrimack College to Mitchel Field on Saturday (Mar. 4) for a double-header beginning at 12:00 p.m.
