MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 26, 2017) – The Molloy baseball team picked up its first win of the season, 9-2 over Concordia, in the final day of the Northeast Challenge at Ripkin Griffith Field. Senior
Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y.) got the start and the win, striking out eight batters in seven innings of work and improved to 1-0 on the campaign.
The Lions got things started early, as senior
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) led off with a double through the left side. He was brought home to give Molloy the 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to center field by junior
Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.). Concordia tied the game up in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from German Dilone (Bronx, N.Y.). In the next inning, the Clippers jumped ahead by one run as Eric Roubal (Patchogue, N.Y.) hit into a run-scoring fielder's choice.
Molloy reclaimed their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Senior
Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) walked, and advanced to second on a single from
Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.). Reigning East Coast Conference Player of the Week
Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.) brought the seniors home with a double to center field. The Lions extended their lead in the fifth inning, as Ragn singled to score senior
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.). Alberghina sent a two-run home run in the next at-bat to put the maroon and white up 7-2. The Lions' final two runs of the game came from
Ryan Hensley (Franklin Square, N.Y.), who walked to score Rahn in the seventh before reaching on an error to score the senior in the ninth.
On the day, Alberghina went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a home run, and a stolen base. Rahn scored four runs, going 1-for-2 with three walks and a stolen base.
Molloy returns to play as they welcome the Warriors to Merrimack College to Mitchel Field on Saturday (Mar. 4) for a double-header beginning at 12:00 p.m.
