ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2017) – Senior
Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) posted 23 points in Molloy's 81-59 victory over the University of the District of Columbia, helping the Lions continue their push for high seed in the East Coast Conference tournament. With a win tonight, Molloy cannot finish lower than fourth-place.
The maroon and white went up 7-2 in the opening minutes on a layup from sophomore
Curtis Jenkins (Farmingdale, N.Y.), a three-pointer from
Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.), and a jumper from Morris. Molloy would go up by as many as 21 points before the end of the opening half on a layup from freshman
Nick Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.). The Firebirds would come within 15 in the final seconds, but a buzzer-beating layup from Morris took Molloy into the locker room up 50-33.
UDC opened the second frame on an 8-0 run to come within nine, but lauyps from Corbett and sophomore
Mike Torre (Massapequa, N.Y.) put Molloy back up by 13 points, 54-41. With 7:58 on the clock, the Firebirds rallied to within eight points on a 15-11 run, taking the score to 67-59. The maroon and white closed the contest on a 14-0 run over the final six minutes and 30 seconds to earn the 81-59 win.
Morris' 23 points came on a 10-of-16 (62.5%) performance from the field, also sinking three of his three foul shot attempts. The Lions went 8-for-8 from the charity stripe on the evening. Jenkins totaled 17 points, seven boards, five assists, and a game-high five steals while Marquardt earned a double-double with 13 points and a game-leading 11 boards. Senior
Mike Guzzardi (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) posted nine points with two blocks, while Torre and Corbett rounded out the scorers for the Lions with eight and seven points, respectively.
Molloy will return in their final home game of the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 25) at 2:00 p.m. The team will be honoring their three seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
