Marquardt Scores Career-High in Senior Day Win Over LIU Post, 78-71

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 25, 2017) – Senior Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) set a new career-high, scoring 34 points in Molloy's regular-season finale against LIU Post on Saturday (Feb. 25). Senior Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) also posted 19 points in the win while adding nine rebounds.

The two teams spent the opening minutes of play trading blows with neither team obtaining much of an advantage. The score would become tied on five occasions in the first 10 minutes of action. The Pioneers would go ahead 28-21 following a 7-0 run, but Molloy responded with consecutive three-pointers from freshmen Nolan Kelly (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) and Nick Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.) to bring the Lions within one. The maroon and white would play from behind until Marquardt hit a three with 3:16 in the opening half to put Molloy up 35-34. The guard would then extend the lead to three points following two foul shots; he would go 17-of-18 from the line on the afternoon. With 59 seconds on the clock, Morris sunk a layup to set the score 41-36. The Pioneers would cut the score to 41-38 on a layup from Jared Hall (South Orange, N.Y.) in the final seconds of the half.

The second half opened on a 6-0 run by the Lions to go up 47-40. LIU Post would put up two straight field goals to cut the deficit to only three points. In the resulting minutes, the Pioneers would continue to counter Molloy's baskets and eventually tied the game 54-54 on a three-pointer from Hall with 12:05 left to play. The Lions roared back to life on a 14-2 run to go up 68-56 with just over six minutes left to play. LIU Post would come within five points, but Molloy would go 8-of-8 from the foul line to end the contest and earn the 78-71 victory.

Sophomore Curtis Jenkins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) just missed a double-double, scoring nine points to go with 10 rebounds. Corbett totaled seven points with three helpers, while senior Mike Guzzardi (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) added three points, six boards, one steal, and one block.

Molloy's win today, partnered with a loss by the University of Bridgeport, secured the Lions the two-seed in the East Coast Conference Tournament. The maroon and white will play in the Semi-Finals on Saturday (Mar. 4), but will need to wait for the conclusion of the play-in round on Wednesday (Mar. 1) to determine who they will face in Bridgeport, Conn.
