Men's Basketball Tops Queens College 77-64

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 1, 2017) – The Molloy College men's basketball team completed the season sweep of Queens College, picking up a 77-64 win over the Knights at Fitzgerald Gym. The Lions improve to 12-9 on the season and 8-4 in conference play and are now tied for third in the league.

The maroon and white were led by 18 points from senior Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.). The guard went 6-of-14 (42.9%) from the field and 4-of-9 (44.4%) from behind the arc. Joining Marquardt in double digits were seniors Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) and Mike Guzzardi (Mount Sinai, N.Y.), totaling 16 and 12 points, respectively, and sophomore Curtis Jenkins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) with 14 points of his own. Scoring for the Lions was rounded out by nine points and four assists from freshman Nick Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.) and eight points from freshman Josh Dennis (Valley Stream, N.Y.).

The Lions found themselves ahead 10-6 in the opening minutes after consecutive baskets from Dennis, but Queens quickly fought back to tie the score with 13 minutes left in the opening half. The teams exchanged scores back and forth with neither obtaining any sustainable advantage. Morris and Marquardt each sunk three-point attempts to push the Lions ahead by seven points. A Guzzardi layup with seven seconds left pushed the lead to double-digits, but the Knights ended the half with a three-pointer from Simon Green (Harlem, N.Y.) to set the score at 38-31 after 20 minutes of play.

The maroon and white opened the second frame with a 7-4 run to go back up by 10 points, 45-35. Morris and Marquardt would combine for seven points in the next 60 seconds to extend the lead to 15 points. Four free throws from Guzzardi paired with a Corbett layup provided the Lions with their largest lead of the contest, ahead 63-42 with 9:31 left to play. In the resulting minutes, the Knights would battle back to come within 12 points two times, but the Lions held on and picked up the 77-64 win.

Molloy once again put forth an impressive team effort, shooting at least 50% in all categories, highlighted by a 77.3% performance from the charity stripe. Marquardt, Morris, Guzzardi, Corbett, and Dennis all recorded blocks on the evening, while Jenkins nabbed a game-high three steals.

The team will look to make it three in a row on Saturday (Feb. 4) as they tip-off with Mercy College at 4:00 p.m. in Quealy Gymnasium.
