Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2017) – The Molloy men's basketball team (3-7) improved to 2-0 in East Coast Conference play following a last-second triple from sophomore
Nick Corbett to defeat Queens College, 74-71.
The Knights led by six points, 70-64, with three minutes left to play before strong foul shooting from Corbett, sophomore
Josh Dennis, and junior
Curtis Jenkins brought the maroon and white within one, 70-69. Queens went to the line, extending its lead to two points with 90 seconds remaining on the clock. Jenkins added two more made free throws, knotting the score with 48 seconds to play. Strong defensive play from Molloy forced a Queens turnover. Following a time out, Corbett put up the game-winning three-pointer with 0.7 seconds on the clock.
Molloy led by as much as eight points, 10-2, to start the contest before the Knights strung together an eight-point run to tie the contest. The score would be knotted three more time through the first frame. Queens ended the half on a 14-7 run to lead 42-37 at the break.
The Lions worked through the second half to cut into the deficit, tying the game 59-59 on a layup from junior
Mike Torre. The Lions continued to play from behind in the final 10 minutes, until Corbett sunk a trey to seal the victory in favor of the home team.
The guard's 27 points led all scorers, going 8-of-15 from the field and 9-of-9 from the foul line. Jenkins added 10 points for the Lions. Dennis led the game with nine boards and a career-high five steals while adding eight points. Freshman
Steven Torre added nine games to round out the top scorers for the maroon and white.
Molloy returns to the court on Saturday (Dec. 16) in the third of six straight games at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions will face Saint Thomas Aquinas College at 2:00 p.m.
