Torre Scores Career-High in Men's Basketball Loss to STAC

Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Dec. 16, 2017) – The men's basketball team fell, 99-87, to the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College. The loss, Molloy's first league loss of the season, sets the team at 3-7 (2-1 ECC), while the Spartans improve to 10-3 (3-0 ECC) with the win. The maroon and white were led by a career-high 24 points and nine rebounds from junior Mike Torre.

In the first half, the Spartans opened the contest on a 12-0 run. Torre tallied the first seven points for the Lions to make the score 15-7. A triple from Kameron Murrell gave STAC its largest lead of the half, 31-13, with just under nine minutes remaining in the frame. The maroon and white chipped away at the lead, coming as close as seven points, 43-36, following foul shots from freshman Steven Torre. Ultimately, the Spartans carried a 14 point lead into the break.

Down by as much as 22 points with five minutes on the clock, the Lions rallied to a 19-3 run to cut STAC's lead to only six points, 85-79, with just over two minutes to play. Murrell led the Spartans efforts in the final minutes, scoring seven points to help the visitors to the 99-87 victory.  

Sophomore Nick Corbett (22) and Josh Dennis (11) and Steven Torre (11) joined Mike in double digits, with Corbett tallying a game-high four steals and Dennis leading the contest with three blocks. The Spartans had three players reach double digits, led by 30 from Murrell.

Molloy continues its home stand as it takes on local rival Adelphi University on Tuesday (Dec. 19) at 7:00 p.m.
