Nolan Kelly (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) led the Molloy men's basketball team with a career-high 20-point performance against the College of Saint Rose at the Saint Rose Tip-Off Classic in Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. Molloy, who fell 86-75 in the effort, sits at 0-2 on the season.
The Lions saw four post double-digit point performances. Following Kelly, junior
Curtis Jenkins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) totaled 18 points while freshman
Steven Torre (Massapequa, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman
Justin Caldwell (Roosevelt, N.Y.) added 14 and 12, respectively. For the second game in a row, Jenkins led the team with six rebounds and four steals. Sophomore
Josh Dennis (Valley Stream, N.Y.), who led with six steals, added five boards, four steals, and one block for the maroon and white.
Molloy began the game on an 8-0 run on back-to-back triples from Kelly and Torre paired with foul shots from Dennis. The Golden Knights rallied back to tie the score before the Lions pulled ahead, 19-11 on baskets from Jenkins and a three-pointer from junior
Santiago Agosti (Little Neck, N.Y.). With 6:32 remaining in the first half, Jack Jones hit a shot from behind the arc to put Saint Rose ahead, 25-24, sparking a 21-4 run for the home team to close the half.
The Lions spent the second frame attempting to chip away at the deficit, coming within nine points on three separate occasions. With under a minute to play, Molloy made a final push led by two three-pointers from Kelly and a layup from Torre. The Golden Knights, however, ended the contest with a dunk from Julian Lipinski to seal the 86-75 victory, improving to 2-0 on the season.
Molloy continues the opening road trip on Friday (Nov. 17) as they play against Caldwell at 6:00 p.m. in the Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament, hosted by Dominican College.
