Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2017) – For the first time in program history, the volleyball team swept the season series with New York Institute of Technology. The 3-0 victory in a rocking Quealy Gymnasium is the first three-set sweep of the Bears since 1997. The Lions now hold sole possession of second place, sitting at 6-2 in East Coast Conference play (17-4 on the season) headed into tomorrow's showdown with first-place LIU Post.

The maroon and white took a 14-7 lead in the opening set before NYIT rallied to bring the contest within three, 16-13. On serving from sophomore
Devon Hagerstrom (Bethpage, N.Y.) Molloy propelled to a six-point run to open up the set to 22-13. Redshirt sophomore
Carly Banks (Camas, Wash.) ended the contest with a kill to put the Lions up 1-0.
In an incredibly close second set, the teams found themselves tied 22-22. The Lions took the final three points of the set to take a 2-0 lead. A kill from freshman
Kacey Affrunti (Levittown, N.Y.) once again knotted the score in the third set, 22-22. Molloy pushed ahead following a kill from Banks before a critical attack error by the Bears' put the maroon and white at match point. Banks found an open spot on the floor to record her 10
th kill of the game and seal the sweep for the Lions.
Molloy served strong on the evening, totaling 10 aces to NYIT's three. The team was led by three from Hagerstrom while senior
Meaghan Carr (Mineola, N.Y.), senior
Dakota O'Neill (Long Beach, N.Y.), and freshman
Emily Meyer (Seaford, N.Y.) each added two. Carr set a career high 17 digs while also chipping in an assist. Sophomore
Sophia Smith (Georgetown, Texas) accounted for 30 of Molloy's 38 assists while senior
Dakota O'Neill (Long Beach, N.Y.) added five. Offensively, Banks led with 10 kills while Affrunti totaled nine. Hagerstrom and sophomore
Hailey Wehr (Wading River, N.y.) each added seven kills, with Hagerstrom adding two blocks and hitting at .467 on the evening.
The Lions head to LIU Post tomorrow. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
