SPARKILL, N.Y. (Jan. 21, 2017) – Both
Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) and sophomore
Curtis Jenkins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) put up 22 points, but it was not enough to overcome the rounded offensive attack of first-place Saint Thomas Aquinas College. The loss drops the Lions to 10-9 on the campaign and 6-4 in league play.
The maroon and white started out down 12-5 before
Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) scored the team's first field goal of the contest to take Molloy within five. A layup from Morris cut the lead to only three points, 12-9. The Spartans would go back ahead by double-digits with 12 minutes left in the opening half. The Lions would come within six points on a layup from Marquardt with nine left to play, but STAC quickly put the lead back to double-digits, where it would remain for the rest of the half. The teams headed into the break with Molloy trailing 44-32.
In the second half, Molloy mounted a 23-12 rally over the course of six minutes to set the score at 90-84 with three minutes left to play. During the run, the Lions went 8-of-9 from the charity stripe; the team would shoot 74.3% on the day. The Spartans closed the contest with a 13-5 run of their own, claiming the 103-89 win on their home court.
Morris' 22 points came after going 8-of-12 from the field and making 5-of-6 free throws, while Jenkins went 9-of-14 from the field. Morris also led the game with three steals. Marquardt totaled 19 points, going 4-of-11 from the field and sinking 10 of his 12 free throw attempts.
Mike Guzzardi (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) also finished in double digits, putting up 15 points. Freshman
Nick Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.) chipped in seven assists in the effort.
Molloy will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 28) as they host Roberts Wesleyan at 2:00 p.m.
