Washington, D.C. (Jan. 11, 2017) – Women's basketball picked up their fifth win in a row at District of Columbia on Wednesday (Jan. 11). The Lions were led by 21 points and eight rebounds from graduate student
Kamala Thompson (Selden, N.Y.). Molloy now stands at 13-4 on the season, and improves to 5-2 in conference play.
The graduate student posted nine of the Lions' 14 points in the first quarter. At the end of the opening 10 minutes, Molloy led UDC by a score of 14-8. In the second frame, senior
Shantana Kanhoye (South Richmond Hill, N.Y.) put up nine of Molloy's 12 points, but 11 points from Kaylah Cooper (Dover, Del.) helped the Firebirds come within three points at the half.
Cooper opened the third quarter with a jumper to cut Molloy's lead to only one point, but three-pointers from Thompson and
Ihnacinse Grady (Amityville, N.Y.) combined with foul shots from
Symone Kelly (Wyandanch, N.Y.) and a layup from
Aliyah McDonald (Hempstead, N.Y.) put the Lions up 36-25. The maroon and white ended the quarter on a 7-5 run to head into the final frame up 43-40. The Firebirds came within nine points in the final quarter, but the Lions pulled away, closing the game on a 12-8 run to pick up the 61-45 win.
Kanhoye totaled 11 of the team's 17 points off the bench on the contest, going 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range. As a team, the Lions shot nearly 50% from the field, going 24-of-52.
The maroon and white will be back in action on Saturday (Jan. 14) as they welcome the Daemen College Wildcats to Quealy Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 12:00 p.m.
