Whyte's Overtime Penalty Kick Wins 2-1 Effort For Men's Soccer Over Caldwell

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2016) - He was five-for-five on penalty kicks in 2015 for Molloy College last season. So when fouled in the box in the 95th minute of a 1-1 contest on Tuesday (Sept. 6), senior forward Mosiah Whyte (Coram, N.Y.) was the clear choice to take the penalty shot and give his team its first win of the 2016 season. Whyte did just that, beating keeper Fritz Meister (Flaach, Switzerland) on the near side to send Molloy to a 2-1 win over Caldwell University at RVC Sports Complex.

Whyte's first goal of the year gave Molloy a win in a contest that the Lions held a 23-10 shot advantage, even though it was the visiting side that picked up an early lead. Off of a corner kick in the 29th minute, the Cougars scored after the ball bounced off of a defender and flew into the back of the net. The Lions did not draw level with the opposition until midway through the second half; after Meister botched a goal kick, senior Joshua Zapata (West Babylon, N.Y.) corraled the ball and sent a looping pass toward fellow senior Kyle Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.). Poetzsch did not let the ball touch the ground as he drove the ball past Meister into the cage with his right foot; the ECC Preseason Player of the Year picked up his first goal of the year and leveled the score. Poetzsch and Whyte combined for 14 of Molloy's 23 shots while key contributions came from bench players such as Kenny Joseph (Great Neck, N.Y.), who had a terrific defensive effort to keep Caldwell's offense at bay for a majority of the second half.

Meister made six saves in cage for the Cougars while Stephen Tappeto (Merrick, N.Y.) had three saves to pick up the win, his first of the season.

Molloy will look for a second straight win on Saturday (Sept. 10) when Franklin Pierce comes to Rockville Centre for a 7 p.m. primetime contest at RVC Sports Complex.
