Men's Soccer Forces Overtime But Falls to Franklin Pierce, 3-2

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2016) - Two second-half goals from senior midfielder Kyle Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.) put the Molloy College men's soccer team on level terms in its contest with Franklin Pierce on Saturday (Sept. 10) but the Ravens scored a stunner in the first session of extra time to nab a 3-2 victory over the Lions at RVC Sports Complex.

Molloy (1-2) found itself trailing in the first minute of the game as Jacob Blixt (Borrby, Sweden) launched a free kick that sailed with the wind and over the head of starting goalie Stephen Tappeto (Merrick, N.Y.) for the game's first goal. Franklin Pierce (2-0) doubled its lead in the 24th minute off of a fine goal from Marius Preber (Jessheim, Norway). Preber outraced the defense to catch up to a long punt by goalie Jadel Poon-Lewis (Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago) as Tappeto came well off his line to defend. The Norwegian was able to get a foot to it and punch the ball over Tappeto into the back of the net, giving the Ravens a 2-0 lead. At this point, sophomore Raul Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.) was called upon to defend the net and did so, making several major saves to keep the maroon and white in the contest.

In the second half, Molloy spread the ball around more and Poetzsch got his opportunities on counterattacking offensives. The senior and ECC Preseason Player of the Year was able to beat Poon-Lewis on a breakway in the 56th minute and then six minutes later with a left-footed strike that knotted up the contest. Poetzsch nearly had a third goal in the 89th minute of the contest as well; off a free kick, the senior's shot ricocheted off the crossbar as did the effort of freshman Paul Morales (Jackson Heights, N.Y.). Poetzsch would head the next attempt in on goal, but he was labeled as being offsides on the play. In overtime, the Ravens utilized some fine passing skills as Preber ended up taking a shot from just inside the 18-yard box that evaded the grasp of Bonilla and fell into the back of the net.

Molloy outshot Franklin Pierce by a 22-19 margin, but the Lions were out-gunned in the corner kick category by a 7-5 ratio. Senior forward Mosiah Whyte (Coram, N.Y.) led the team with seven shots and three shots on goal but Poon-Lewis made seven saves to pick up the win. Bonilla had five saves in net for the Lions.

Molloy wraps up the four-game homestand with a matchup against Nyack on Tuesday (Sept. 13) at 4 p.m.
