Volleyball Wins Second In A Row, Dispatches Queens in Four Sets

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 1, 2016) - Fine performances were turned out up and down the roster for the Molloy College volleyball team as the Lions won their home finale on Tuesday (Nov. 1) over Queens College in four sets. Scores favored the maroon and white by a count of 25-23, 25-15, 18-25 and 25-22.

Molloy (6-21, 3-8 ECC) was paced by a team-high 14 kills from Shannon Wren (Lynbrook, N.Y.) as the freshman pushed closer to a 300-kill season for the maroon and white. Wren now holds a team-best total of 271 kills for the 2016 campaign; meanwhile, Hailey Wehr (Wading River, N.Y.) and Danielle Williams (Alba, Texas) each collected eight kills as rookie middle hitter Devon Hagerstrom (Bethpage, N.Y.) totaled seven kills in the victory. Hagerstrom also had eight block assists to tie a single-match record set back in 2007 by Angela Barra, and the rookie's 97 total blocks are fourth-most all-time in a single season. First-year setter Sophia Smith (Georgetown, Texas) broke another plateau with a 38-assist night, pushing herself over 800 assists for the season with a grand total of 828.
Meanwhile, the back row play was solid yet again; junior libero Dakota O'Neill (Long Beach, N.Y.) spearheaded the defensive efforts with 21 digs to push herself over the 400-dig mark for the season. Williams added six digs, Smith chipped in with five and four players---including Wehr, Hagerstrom, Jeanne Reinis (La Mirada, Calif.) and Tara Carlin (Kings Park, N.Y.) each posted four digs in the win.

Queens (7-18, 3-9 ECC) detracted from its efforts with 31 attacking errors on the evening. Despite the Knights' miscues, Nicoletta DiCocco (Bayport, N.Y.) had a match-best 18 kills. Sophomore Malaika Hollis (Farmingville, N.Y.) added 14 kills and freshman Cassidy Stewart (Keller, Texas) chipped in with 11. Setter Kristen Moore (Medford, N.Y.) dished out 38 assists.

Molloy heads on the road for the final three games of the season, with a contest at NYIT upcoming on Thursday evening (Nov. 3) at 7 p.m.
