Women's Volleyball Earns Split in Day One of East Stroudsburg Invitational

(Sept. 11, 2015) - The Molloy College volleyball team earned its first victory of the 2015 season in managing a split during the first day of the East Stroudsburg Invitational on Friday. The Lions (1-6) captured a three-set sweep of Nyack (1-3) (25-16, 25-16, 25-16) before falling in straight games to the hosts, East Stroudsburg (2-3), by scores of 25-17, 25-19, and 25-21 at the Koehler Fieldhouse.

The Lions turned in the team's best performance of the season so far in sweeping the Warriors. Sophomore Samira Escobar (Fountain Valley, Calif.) thundered 10 kills to go along with 10 digs for a double-double, while freshman outside hitter Carly Banks (Camas, Wash.) had a team-high 11 kills. Fellow first-year Jeanne Reinis (Santa Fe Springs, Calif.) contributed 10 kills, as the three players combined to hit at a .265 clip, which helped the team collect a solid .246 hitting percentage. Junior setter Ally De Kruyf (Norwalk, Calif.) dished out 29 assists and added 14 digs, which tied her for the team lead with sophomore libero Dakota O'Neill (Long Beach, N.Y.). Freshman setter Natalie Anderson (Tualatin, Ore.) led Nyack with six kills, 13 assists and 15 digs in the loss.

East Stroudsburg 3, Molloy 0
Despite solid matches from Reinis, De Kruyf and O'Neill, the maroon and white were unable to keep the momentum going from the team's previous match. Reinis accumulated ten kills, but also had seven hitting errors to accrue a .083 hitting percentage on the match. Juniors Spencer Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Grace Cookson (San Diego, Calif.) added five kills apiece, while De Kruyf paced play with 21 assists. O'Neill (15), Escobar (8) and freshman defensive specialist Meaghan Carr (Mineola, N.Y.) combined to give Molloy 28 digs on the defensive effort. East Stroudsburg was buoyed by the hitting prowess of sophomore Desiree Claxton (Stafford, Va.) and freshman Madison McCunney (Aston, Pa.). who combined for 25 kills on 47 total attempts in the victory.

The Molloy College women's volleyball team concludes play at the East Stroudsburg Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 12) when the Lions play Saint Anselm at 10 a.m. and Bowie State at 4 p.m.
