Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 24, 2015) - This evening, the Molloy College men's basketball team defeated the Knights of Queens College, 73-69 -- clinching a playoff berth in the East Coast Conference Postseason Tournament. With the win, the Lions improve to 15-11 overall and 10-8 in the ECC, while the Knights fall to 6-19 overall and 6-12 in conference play.
At halftime, the Lions narrowly trailed the Knights, 37-36, in a tightly contested first half. In that first stanza, the Lions recorded a shooting percentage of 56.5% and received a combined 23 points from junior guard Brandon Williams (Baldwin, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.).
The second half played witness to the Knights and Lions going back and forth, trading basket for basket. Eventually, the Lions broke a tie at the 9:52 mark and never looked back. The Lions' highwater mark of the second half came when sophomore forward Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) drove in a layup to put Molloy up by 11.
Williams finished with 17 points, shooting 6-15 from the field (2-5 from downtown), while Morris poured in 17 as well.
The Knights were paced by Diego Maldonado and his 20 points.
PLAYOFF PUSH: The Lions' men's basketball team is headed back to the postseason for the eighth-straight year...The program has reached the ECC semifinal round in each of the last two seasons...Both occasions were losses to the University of Bridgeport.
SENIOR DAY: The Lions' men's basketball program will honor and recognize its trio of graduating seniors -- Richard Zoller, Miles Prendergast and Matt McLeod -- prior to Saturday's game versus Dowling College...The festivites will start shortly before tipoff at 2:30 p.m.
