Since taking over as head coach of the Molloy men’s basketball program in 1994-95, Charles Marquardt has guided the Lions to over 300 victories. Marquardt's teams have been a part of playoff action in 26 of his 30 years to date, including earning the program's first-ever East Coast Conference Championship, defeating the University of Bridgeport, 90-86, in overtime in 2018-19. In a historic season, the Lions appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program's history, putting up a program-record 21-10 record on the campaign.

Throughout his tenure with Molloy, Marquardt has coached nine student-athletes that have been inducted into the Molloy Athletic Hall of Fame, with more likely to come. He has had 19 players named to All-Conference teams, totaling 37 selections, while also having a number of players designated as Rookie/Player of the Year. Nine members of the maroon and white were named All-Metropolitan, totaling 14 selections, including two Player of the Year nods in 2013-14 and 2022-23. Marquardt also coached six NABC All-East selections.
Several players have gone on to play professionally overseas, and has had three players reach the G-League, the developmental league of the NBA, in John Petrucelli (2010-2014), Charlie Marquardt (2014-17), and Jaylen Morris (2014-17) make it to the NBA G-League. Most recently, Morris became the first in the program's history to be signed by an NBA team, playing six games with the Atlanta Hawks before signing a multi-year contract in 2018.
The three-time coach of the Empire State Games played four years of varsity basketball at NAIA member St. Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine. During his career, he helped the Monks to a four-year record of 93-24, while maintaining an NAIA national ranking all four years. Marquardt walked away from St. Joseph’s as the all-time leader in steals, and as the single-game record-holder for assists. He was voted the defensive player of the year three times, and was named to the “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities” for his work in the classroom.
Marquardt played high school basketball at Xavier High School in New York. He helped the squad to CHSAA City Quarterfinals during the 1981-82 season, and is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, after playing on the 1,000th-win team.
Marquardt has been awarded a number of prestigious honors during his coaching career, being named Coach of the Year four times as well as receiving the Sam Shoenfeld Sportsmanship Award from the College Basketball Officials Association on two occasions.
Marquardt currently lives in Belle Harbor, N.Y. with his wife, Kathleen and children, Charles, Jr. and Katie, who both played basketball for Molloy.
