Men's Basketball Toppled by LIU Post, 61-56

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2015) - Despite three players reaching double figures in scoring, the Molloy College men's basketball team lost to LIU Post in an East Coast Conference battle on Wednesday night, 61-56. With the win, the Pioneers are now 13-11 overall and 8-8 in the conference, while the Lions fell to 13-11 and 8-8 in the league.

The opening stanza ended up being tight as LIU Post scored 34 points, compared to Molloy's 30. The Lions really kicked in into gear with five minutes remaining, after only scoring 11 points. The Lions converted on a slew of free throw attempts and closed out the first period with a buzzer-beating layup from junior guard Maurice Gatson (New York, N.Y.).

The second half witnessed four scoring ties, with the last coming with 45 seconds left in regulation. The Lions continued to battle and chip away, exhibiting how deep and strong their bench is, after remaining in the game despite losing senior center Richard Zoller (Syosset, N.Y.) and senior forward Miles Prendergast (Bayport, N.Y.) to foul-outs. Down 59-56 with three seconds left, the Lions chucked the ball down the court in an attempt for a quick three-point turnaround shot, but the Pioneers intercepted the basketball before it ever reached a Molloy player. That interception sealed the win for LIU Post.

For the Lions, senior guard Matt McLeod (Greenlawn, N.Y.) scored 13 points, while Gatson and sophomore guard Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) added 10 each.

LIU Post was led by Tyuan Williams' double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds, while P.J. Torres scored 13.

Head Coach Charles Marquardt and the Lions return to the hardwood on Saturday, February 21 when they host NYIT on Wounded Warrior Day at 2:30 p.m.
