Men's Basketball Wins 80-75 Thriller Over Roberts Wesleyan

Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Dec. 13, 2014) - On Saturday afternoon, the Molloy College men's basketball team looked to split its weekend trip to upstate New York after falling to Daemen College last night. The Lions accomplished that as they earned an 80-75 East Coast Conference-victory versus Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y.  Molloy was led by a pair of 19-point performances from sophomore forward Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) and junior guard Brandon Williams (Baldwin, N.Y.). Marquardt -- known as a three-point sharpshooter -- didn't disappoint as he nailed five of his seven attempts from downtown, while Williams continued his excellent foul shot shooting, draining 11 of his 13 chances.

The Lions, who are now 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the ECC, jumped on the scoreboard early as senior center Richard Zoller (Syosset, N.Y.) hit a jumper just 24 seconds into the first half. That opening period had five scoring ties, which echoed how tight the competition was -- with the fifth tie coming as late as 2:30 before halftime. In the final two and a half minutes of the opening half, Molloy tacked up six points -- back-to-back-to-back layups by sophomore guard Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) -- to head into the locker room with a 40-34 advantage.

In the second half, no team led by more than five points in the opening seven minutes, until Roberts Wesleyan (5-3 overall, 1-1 ECC) started to find some offensive rhythm. The Redhawks built up an eight-point lead before seeing some of it slip away. The Lions continued to claw at their deficit and eventually brought it so close that there were three scoring ties, with the final coming as late as 4:04 remaining in regulation. Marquardt's fifth three-ball of the night and the team's perfect free throw shooting in the final two minutes of the game helped Molloy earn the league triumph.

For the Lions, Marquardt and Williams led the team with 19 points each, while Morris poured in 17. Williams also added four assists and one steal.

UP NEXT: Head Coach Charles Marquardt and the Lions return to the court on Saturday, December 20 when they host ECC-rival St. Thomas Aquinas College. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.

SCOUTING STAC: The Spartans are currently 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the league...Matthew Lee is pacing the squad with 13.8 points per game.
