Prior to his arrival in Rockville Centre, Smith was a member of Academy Sports of Long Island's coaching staff for two years. As an assistant coach on both the boy's and girl's sides, he was instrumental in guiding three different teams to a USAV National Championship berth. In 2019, Smith took the helm and saw his team to the Girl's Junior National Championship tournament. More than two dozen of Smith's teams have gone on to compete at the Division I or II level as a scholarship-earning player.
A former student-athlete himself, Smith was a three-year captain at SUNY New Paltz. In his tenure, the Hawks won its first UVC Championship and achieved a ranking of #1 in Division III. An outside hitter, Smith was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team, the Hawks' MVP, and was selected to receive the Heinz Ahlmeyer Jr. Award, the highest honor bestowed on a New Paltz student-athlete. Today, Smith still competes nationally on the highest level in both beach and indoor volleyball, recently finishing in fifth in the Open Division of the USAV Nationals.
Part of an extensive volleyball family, all three of his siblings have also competed in collegiate volleyball. His brothers, Nick and Christian, followed Smith at New Paltz, both earning National Championships and All-American status before Christian went on to play professionally for Pamvohaikos in Greece's top league. His sister, Jamie, was an All-Conference player at Iona College. His mother, Debbie, played at then CW Post and met his father, Pat, playing beach volleyball.
