New Haven, CT — The field hockey team opened the 2026 season Saturday afternoon, falling to Southern Connecticut State University, 6-1, at Jess Dow Field. The Lions open the season with a record of 0-1 while SCSU improve to 3-2 with the victory.
How it Happened
- The Owls generated an early scoring opportunity after being awarded a penalty corner in the opening 2:30 of play. Avery Vaccaro's shot was able to get behind senior goalie Kayla Monique Lipscomb, but junior Catherine Sasso's stick was there to make her first defensive save of the season and keep the contest scoreless.
- Molloy would fend off an additional two penalty corners with Lipscomb making a save before Keana Criscuolo's goal put SCSU on the board just under 10 minutes into the contest. The junior added a second two minutes later to give the home team a 2-0 lead after the opening quarter of play.
- Molloy got on the board late in the second quarter converting on a penalty corner opportunity with sophomore Katie Ogurick finding the back of the net off a feed from junior Samantha Naples to bring the Lions within two, 3-1, at the half.
- SCSU would add two more goals in the third quarter before a final marker in the fourth to round out the scoring.
- Molloy generated five penalty corners in the effort, but saw just the one shot and shot on goal.
- Sasso added a second defensive save in the effort, marking the second game in her career with multiple, while Lipscomb made nine in net.
