Women’s Soccer Concludes Opening Weekend at Adelphi

Garden City, N.Y. – The Molloy women's soccer team matched up with local rival Adelphi Saturday evening, falling to the Panthers, 2-1, at Motamed Field. The Lions wrap up the first weekend of the season with an 0-2 record while Adelphi improves to 1-0-1.

How it Happened
  • Offense was hard to come by for both squads until the eighth minute. Adelphi midfielder Dalia Morelli recorded the contests first shot on goal, but a defensive save by the Molloy back line kept the game scoreless.
  • The cardinal and white saw their first chance come from senior Isabella Muro in the 15th minute. Muro streaked down the right side and fired a shot that would get deflected by a defender, but Adelphi goalkeeper Maddy Catalanotti still denied the chance.
  • Over the next three minutes, the home team put two shots on goal in a 45 second span that would be saved by senior goalkeeper Elyse Muñoz.
  • Muñoz was tested once again in the 29th minute, making a comfortable save to keep the contest deadlocked.
  • In the 33rd minute, Muro created another scoring chance, but Catalanotti was there to make another save.
  • Adelphi broke the seal with 47 seconds remaining in the first half. Kayleigh Goodrich found the back of the net following a 40-yard free kick to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • Six minutes into the second stanza, junior Bella Juliano recorded two shots in four seconds, but neither chance would land on target.
  • The road team's offense would continue to generate momentum, securing two shots on goal in the 61st and 65th minute from sophomore Rebecca Petrellese and Juliano, but Catalanotti would not allow either chance to get past her.
  • The Panthers gave themselves a two-goal cushion in the 72nd minute after Adela Odindo scored her first goal of the season.
  • Adelphi looked to put the game away in the 77th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick, but Muñoz would make a big save on Goodrich to keep the contest within reach.
  • With 1:21 to go, the cardinal and white applied pressure with Muro cutting into the 18-yard box on the right side. The senior fired a shot that was blocked before freshman Ysabelle Perillo followed with another blocked attempt. Juliano finished off the chance scoring on a rebound to bring the Lions within one, 2-1.
  • Molloy would run out of time in pursuit of the games tying goal, as Adelphi would clinch the 2-1 victory.
