Flushing, N.Y. - The softball team had a pair of one-run contests this afternoon against the Knights of Queens College. Molloy took the first game, 2-1, before falling 13-12 in the second game. Molloy sits at 9-21 on the season and 2-6 in East Coast Conference play after today while Queens is 5-18 (2-6 ECC).
Game One: Molloy 2, Queens 1
- Junior Stevie Dabbadie worked out of an early bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first inning, making a force out at home to keep a run off the board before forcing a line out to end the inning.Â
- Freshman Alyssa Bueno singled through the right side to start the third inning, moving into scoring position following a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Casey Kissinger. Redshirt sophomore Alexis Montgomery singled to center to set the table for the game's first run to cross the plate via a sacrifice fly from senior Mae Savage.Â
- Dabbadie kept the Knights off the board again in the fourth, striking Brooke Waiting out looking with the bases loaded.Â
- The home team broke through in the fourth inning with a single and a sacrifice bunt before an RBI single to left from Kadie Cain tied the the game.
- Bueno reached base again in the fifth inning with a lead-off walk. Small ball continued to set the table for the Lions, moving the runner to third following a sacrifice bunt and a ground out before Savage picked up her second RBI of the afternoon with a single to right center field to make it 2-1.Â
- The Knights threatened once again in the seventh inning, putting runners on first and third before Dabbadie forced Caylea Campbell to line into a double play to senior Emily McGurk at third base to secure the win.
- Montgomery led with two hits in a 2-for-3 afternoon. The Lions saw hits from Savage (2 RBI), Bueno, and sophomore Megan Wegel.Â
- Dabbadie earned her third win of the season in another complete game effort, striking out three while allowing just the one earned run.Â
Game Two: Queens 13, Molloy 12
- After a lead-off walk to Savage, the Lions' bats went to work. A double from Dabbadie moved Savage just 60 feet from home before Wegel sent the ball over the center field fence for her second home run of the season, giving the visitors a 3-0 advantage.Â
- Junior Mariah Cepeda doubled in the next at bat before advancing to third on the wild pitch and scoring on a RBI single from Bueno to make it 4-0.Â
- The Knights got even in the home half of the inning, starting the game with three-straight singles to get on the board before a three-run home run from Olivia Wanser evened the score at four.Â
- Freshman Ava Zicchinelli struck out two batters in the first to avoid any further damage.Â
- A fielder's choice and stolen base allowed McGurk to be in scoring position, finding her way home following a fielding error by the Queens outfield to make it 5-4.
- Two walks and a single set the table for a grand slam from Brigid Hood to put the Knights ahead 8-5 in the bottom of the third.Â
- Walks to Cepeda and freshman Skyler Secondino allowed Kissinger to pick up an RBI with a single to center field to bring the Lions back within two.Â
- A sacrifice fly from Wanser and a single from Kayla Denino added two more runs for Queens in the fourth.Â
- A single from McGurk, fielding error, and hit by a pitch loaded the bases for the Lions in the top of the fifth inning. It would take eight pitches after finding herself in a 0-2 hole, but Cepeda countered with a grand slam of her own, the first of her career, to tie the contest at 10 with a swing of the bat.
- Molloy regained the lead in the sixth inning, taking advantage of two wild pitches, a walk, and a fielding error before McGurk picked up an RBI ground out to make it 12-10.
- Singles from Allie Parascandola and Cain as well as a walk to Wanser loaded the bases for Denino, who brought Queens back within one with a single up the middle. The following at bat, Carla Chiaramonte tied the contest with a sacrifice fly.Â
- Despite a lead-off double from Secondino in the seventh, Molloy was unable to plate a run in the seventh.Â
- The Knights loaded the bases with a single, hit by pitch, and walk in the home half of the inning before a walk-off single up the middle sealed the home team the victory.
- Cepeda had a career-best four RBI with the grand slam. Wegel followed with a career-high three RBI.Â
- Cepeda (2-for-4), Dabbadie (2-for-5), and Bueno (2-for-4) led Molloy in hits.Â
