Buffalo, N.Y. - The softball team split another doubleheader this afternoon from Dobson Field against the Saints of D'Youville University, bringing the Lions to 10-22 on the season and 3-7 in East Coast Conference play. A four-run third inning for the Saints was the difference in a 7-3 loss in the first game before the Lions took the second game, 7-6.
Game One: D'Youville 7, Molloy 3
- The afternoon was off to a slow start for the Lions with the first batter reaching via an error before moving 60 feet from home following a stolen base and ground out before scoring on a single from Mikayla Hussar. The lead would double to 2-0 following a double from Frankie Morris.
- A third run crossed the plate in the second inning on a fielder's choice from Danielle Fenlong.
- The Saints plated four runs on four hits with RBIs from Morris, Summer Clark, and Isabella Mancino to make it 7-0 after three innings.
- Back-to-back singles from sophomore Megan Wegel and junior Mariah Cepeda got things started for the Lions, allowing freshman Alyssa Bueno to plate Molloy's first run of the afternoon with a single to right field.
- Freshman Skyler Secondino, Bueno, and sophomore Gwen Woodsit each singled in the sixth inning to load the bases, allowing senior Mae Savage to pick up an RBI and cut the deficit to five.
- Secondino rounded out the Molloy offense with a sacrifice fly in the seventh to make it 7-3, scoring Wegel, who reached with a double to third earlier in the inning.
- Wegel went 3-for-4 on the afternoon with two doubles. Bueno also went 3-for-4, setting a career-high in hits.
Game Two: Molloy 7, D'Youville 6
- The Saints struck first for the second game in a row, taking advantage of a walk to score a run following a double from Morris.
- The Lions were much quicker to respond, putting up four hits in the top of the second. Cepeda doubled before back-to-back singles from Bueno and Secondino loaded the bases.
- A single to second base from redshirt sophomore Alexis Montgomery tied the game.
- Singles from Wegel and junior Stevie Dabbadie put runners on base for Cepeda, who gave Molloy its first lead of the afternoon with a double to left. A ground out from Bueno the following at bat made it 3-1.
- A sacrifice fly from Leah Batterson cut the lead to just one in the fourth inning.
- Dabbadie kicked off the fifth inning with a double before a single from Cepeda put two runners on. Secondino pushed the ball through the short stop's legs to plate two runs and make it a 5-2 contest.
- The bases would be loaded for Molloy in the sixth inning following singles from Savage and Dabbadie and a walk to sophomore Casey Kissinger. Wegel scored Savage with a fielder's choice RBI to make it 6-2 before a passed ball allowed Kissinger to run home and make it a five-run game.
- The Saints offense clicked in the sixth inning, loading the bases on three-straight singles before Sophia Arno plated two runs with a double to right center field.
- A pinch hit sacrifice fly from Gabby Moreno and single from Fenlong made it a one-run game, 7-6. Freshman Ava Zicchnielli forced a ground out to end the inning and limit the damage.
- The rookie allowed just one hit in the bottom of the seventh, but retired the next three Saints in order to earn the win.
- Dabbadie and Cepeda both went 3-for-4 and combined for three extra-base hits.
