Caldwell, N.J. - It would come down to the bottom of the seventh inning to determine a winner in both halves of this afternoon's softball doubleheader against Caldwell University, with the Cougars coming out victorious in both contests. Molloy sits at 10-24 on the season after the non-league match-ups.
Game One: Caldwell 2, Molloy 1
- Base runners would be hard to come by for both teams for most of the afternoon. A single by Emily Kurth and a walk to Eden Ehle put runners on first and second for the Cougars in the second inning, but freshman Ava Zicchinelli kept the game scoreless by forcing a ground out to end the inning.
- It would be Molloy's turn to threaten in the fourth inning, with singles from senior Emily McGurk and junior Mariah Cepeda, but Katie O'Connor also kept runs off the board.
- A fielding error allowed the Lions to start the seventh inning with a base runner, moving just 60 feet from home after a sacrifice bunt and a ground out. Sophomore Gwen Woodsit would pick up a clutch infield single to the shortstop in a pinch hit opportunity to account for the game's first run and send Molloy to the bottom of the seventh with a lead.
- A lead-off double from Sam Didonna, a sacrifice bunt, a hit by pitch, and a stolen base put runners on second and third for the Cougars in the home half of the inning. A single through the left side from Melissa Lugo tied the game before Kenzie Nazionale's single down the left field line clinched the contest for the home team.
- Cepeda, Woodsit, McGurk, and redshirt sophomore Alexis Montgomery accounted for Molloy's hits.
- Zicchinelli struck out two and allowed just the two earned runs on five hits in the loss.
Game Two: Caldwell 3, Molloy 2
- The stalemate continued to start the second contest with the teams combining for three hits through the first three innings of play.
- Junior Stevie Dabbadie got things started for the Lions with a single up the middle on the first pitch of the fourth inning. A sacrifice bunt and a dropped fly ball allowed her to score to put the visitors in front, 1-0.
- The lead would not last long, as two bunt singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Cougar. An infield sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Lexi Weiss tied the contest at one in the home half of the inning.
- Singles from Lindsay Oller and Kurth established a first and third situation. Caldwell was able to successfully execute a delayed steal to take a 2-1 lead.
- Freshman pinch hitter Gabby Rocha led off the seventh inning with a single down the right field line for the Lions. A sacrifice bunt from Montgomery put her into scoring position, allowing Bueno to plate the game-tying run with a single to right field to keep Molloy in the game.
- The Lions put runners on second and third thanks to a single from McGurk and a passed ball, but were unable to score an insurance run.
- A walk and a wild pitch kicked off the bottom of the seventh for the home team. Back-to-back sacrifice bunts, including a game-winning one from Amanda Preston, put the Cougars ahead.
- The Lions saw hits from eight different players, including ones for extra bases from sophomore Megan Wegel and freshman Skyler Secondino.
