Secondino Walk-Off Double Seals Split with CSI

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The softball team split a doubleheader this afternoon at Bob Klein Field against the College of Staten Island following an extra-inning walk-off double from freshman Skyler Secondino. The evening sets the Lions at 11-25 on the season and 4-8 in East Coast Conference play.

Game One: CSI 10, Molloy 5
  • Two doubles were all it would take for the Dolphins to go in front as Jianna Lopez and Madilyn Paul traded places on the base paths to go in front 1-0.
  • Solo home runs from senior Emily McGurk and sophomore Megan Wegel followed in the home half of the inning to make it 2-1 for the Lions.
  • Three singles loaded the bases for Staten Island in the second inning, before a bases-loaded walk to Presley Borne tied the game. Two more runs would come home following a single from Lopez and Milene Mendoza, giving the visitors a 4-2 lead.
  • Staten Island would score two more runs in both the third and fourth innings to go in front 8-2.
  • Freshman Alyssa Bueno got things started again for the Lions in the bottom of the fifth with a four-pitch walk. A single from senior Mae Savage put runners in place for McGurk to plate two runs and cut the lead in half with a triple to right center field.
  • Molloy continued to chip away in the sixth inning with a double from Wegel and single from sophomore Mariah Cepeda putting runners on first and third. A pinch hit single from sophomore Gwen Woodsit drove in one run to make it 8-5.
  • Staten Island rounded out the scoring in the seventh inning with four hits scoring two runs to lead 10-5 for the win.
  • McGurk drove in three runs on a two hit afternoon with both of them going for extra bases. Wegel also had two hits, both for extra bases.

Game Two: Molloy 2, CSI 1 (9 innings)
  • Two walks and a fielding error loaded the bases for the Dolphins to start the game, but freshman Ava Zicchnielli forced a ground out to prevent any damage from being done.
  • Bueno led off the second inning with a single to right field. Secondino and junior Stevie Dabbadie followed with outfield singles of their own to load the bases.
  • Sophomore Casey Kissinger plated the first run of the contest with a sacrifice fly to center field, giving the Lions the lead.
  • The Molloy defense flashed the leather with a number of strong defensive plays, including a double play in the fourth and once again forcing the Dolphins to leave the bases loaded without scoring a run to maintain their advantage.
  • CSI would finally break through in the top of the seventh. A double from Rose Joseph gave the Dolphins a base runner. After a ground out moved her to third, she was able to score on a passed ball to tie the contest.
  • The Lions were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
  • The eighth inning would not result in runs for either side, pushing the contest to the ninth.
  • Zicchnielli forced all three Dolphins to fly out in the top half of the inning.
  • Bueno legged out a single to short stop in the home half of the inning. Running in her place, Zicchinelli stole second to be in position to score when Secondino sent the ball to the right center field fence to win the game for the Lions.
  • Secondino and Bueno each had two hits.
  • Zicchinelli allowed just one earned run on six hits to earn the victory.
