Softball Sweeps Doubleheader with Queens

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The softball team had two strong offensive outings this afternoon from Bob Klein Field against the Knights of Queens College. The Lions won the doubleheaders by scores of 6-2 and 7-0, picking up the second shutout of the season. Molloy sits at 16-32 on the season and 6-12 in East Coast Conference play headed into the final doubleheader of the regular season.

Game One: Molloy 6, Queens 2
  • The Lions opened the game with one of the strongest innings of the season, scoring five runs on six hits.
  • Redshirt sophomore Alexis Montgomery and senior Mae Savage both singled to the outfield to put runners on first and third for freshman Alyssa Bueno, who put Molloy on the board with a single to left field.
  • A walk from sophomore Megan Wegel loaded the bases, setting up freshman Skyler Secondino for a sacrifice fly to double the lead.
  • Junior Stevie Dabbadie sent a double to left center to plate another run before junior Mariah Cepeda cleared the bases and plated two with a double of her own.
  • The Knights got one run back right away, taking advantage of a lead-off single from Carla Chiaramonte before an RBI double from Mia Pineiro put the visitors on the board in the second inning.
  • A fielder's choice and stolen base allowed Olivia Wanser to add a second run for Queens with a single up the middle in the fifth to make it 5-2.
  • Senior Emily McGurk led off the sixth inning with a double to left field, advancing to third on a ground out from Savage before scoring on a single from Bueno to round out the offense for the game.
  • Dabbadie retired the final three Knights in order to secure the win, tossing six innings in relief.
  • Bueno (4-for-4) and Cepeda (2-for-3) each led with two RBI. McGurk also had a two-hit afternoon (2-for-3) for the Lions.
Game Two: Molloy 7, Queens 0
  • The Knights loaded the bases with two singles and a walk to start the contest, but Secondino eliminated the threat with her first strikeout of the afternoon to end the inning.
  • The Lions were first to crack the scoreboard again. Wegel was hit by a pitch to put a runner on base, moving to second following a ground out from Secondino before a single from Dabbadie and defensive error from the Knights allowed her to score.
  • McGurk would kick things off for Molloy in the fourth inning, scoring from first following a single through the left side from Montgomery.
  • A single up the middle from Savage would make it 3-0 before Wegel doubled to add another run for the home team.
  • Singles from Savage and Wegel paired with a fielder's choice and smart base running from Savage loaded the bases for the Lions in the sixth inning.
  • A single through the left side from Secondino plated one run before Dabbadie followed up with one of her own to plate two more.
  • Molloy threatened to end the game via the run rule, but Nellie Donahue came into the circle for the Knights in relief and immediately recorded two strikeouts to keep her team alive.
  • Two singles and a hit by pitch once again loaded the bases for Queens, but Secondino forced a ground out to end the game and earn the win.
  • The freshman struck out three in her first career shutout.
  • Dabbadie drove in a team-leading two runs.
  • Montgomery (3-for-4) topped the squad with three hits while Savage (2-for-4), Wegel (2-for-2), and Dabbadie (2-for-4) each had two hits.
