Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The softball team fell in a pair of one-run contests this afternoon against the Mavericks of Mercy University, 2-1 and 1-0. The losses set the Lions at 14-32 on the season and 4-12 in East Coast Conference play.
Game One: Mercy 2, Molloy 1
- Molloy would be the first to crack the scoreboard, loading the bases with two walks and an error. A third walk in the inning gave junior Mariah Cepeda an RBI after a nine-pitch at bat, battling back after being behind 0-2, to give the Lions the lead in the first inning.
- The Mavericks tied the game in the second inning following a lead-off double from Julianna Coluccio and three walks.Â
- What would become the game-winning run was scored in the third inning, with a walk and another double from Coluccio putting runners at first and third to set up a sacrifice fly from Madelyn Perrone.Â
- The Lions' offense struggled to get started, registering just three hits in the final four innings.
Game Two: Mercy 1, Molloy 0
- The defensive battle continued as the teams combined for just five hits through the first four and a half innings.Â
- A hit by pitch and single from Averi Miller put two runners on for the Mavericks in the home half of the fifth, scoring on an RBI single from Perrone.Â
- A single from redshirt sophomore Alexis Montgomery paired with a throwing error and then a sacrifice bunt from senior Mae Savage put the tying run just 60 feet from home in the sixth inning, but the Lions were unable to drive it in.Â
