Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The softball team returned to Bob Klein Field this afternoon for an East Coast Conference doubleheader against the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College, falling 4-3 and 6-1. The losses set Molloy at 14-30 on the season and 4-10 in league play.
The Lions joined part in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Strikeout Cancer initiative, raising funds to support two families close to the program currently battling or have lost their battle with thyroid cancer. Game One: STAC 4, Molloy 3
- The Spartans went to work right away, loading the bases with two singles and a walk. Yazmine Garcia drew a five-pitch walk with the bases loaded for an RBI to make it 1-0.
- Walks doomed the Lions again in the third inning with a four-pitch lead-off one issued to Adriana Coira. Sofia Marella sent the ball over the center field fence to make it 3-0 in favor of the visitors.Â
- Molloy got on the board in the home half of the inning, loading the bases with singles from senior Emily McGurk and redshirt sophomore Alexis Montgomery as well as a fielder's choice from senior Mae Savage. Freshman Alyssa Bueno came to the plate and hit into a fielder's choice that scored McGurk.Â
- Montgomery's afternoon continued with a lead-off triple in the fifth inning before scoring on a pinch hit single from sophomore Gwen Woodsit.Â
- A single from Bueno followed by a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position for junior Mariah Cepeda, who tied the game up at three with an RBI ground out.Â
- A double from Olivia Leon and single from Marella allowed Trinadey Santiago to plate the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning. The Spartans threatened to score more runs, but sophomore Megan Wegel gunned a near-perfect throw from center field to home plate to keep an additional run off the board.Â
- Bueno singled in the home half of the inning to keep hope alive for the home team, but pitcher Lauren Falk sat the final two Lions down on strikeouts to earn the win.Â
- Montgomery led with three hits while Bueno had two.Â
- Woodsit, Wegel, McGurk, and freshman Skyler Secondino accounted for Molloy's remaining hits.
Game Two: STAC 6, Molloy 1
- After three quick and effective innings from pitchers Emma Grace Popp and Secondino, STAC was able to break the stalemate in the top of the fourth with the second home run of the day for Marella, giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
- The designated player added a fifth RBI on the afternoon with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
- An infield single from McGurk set up senior Mae Savage for an RBI double to center field to put Molloy on the board in the home half of the inning.Â
- STAC added three runs on four hits, including a home run from Alyssa Haberstroh, in the seventh to break the game open.Â
- Freshman Gabby Rocha led off the bottom of the seventh with a double, but the Lions were then retired in order.
- Five players put up a hit: Savage, Bueno, Rocha, McGurk, and junior Stevie Dabbadie.Â

Molloy's next contest was previously scheduled for tomorrow (Apr. 25) at Mercy University. However, due to the expected weather the game has been postponed to a future date that is yet to be determined. The next game on the schedule for the Lions is a doubleheader against Queens College on Tuesday (Apr. 28) at 3:30 p.m. from Rockville Centre.Â
