Softball Comes Up Short at Pace Doubleheader

Pleasantville, N.Y. - The softball team dropped a pair of one-run contests this afternoon at Pace University, 5-4 and 10-9. The Lions sit at 14-28 following the losses.

Game One: Pace 5, Molloy 4
  • Pace took a lead in the bottom of the third inning with a lead-off home run from Ava Edmond.
  • The Setters added two more runs, taking advantage of a bases-loaded single from Willa Poplawski to make it 3-0.
  • Sophomore Casey Kissinger led off the fifth inning with a double to left center field, scoring on a single up the middle from senior Emily McGurk to bring the Lions within two.
  • The home team's offense continued in the bottom half of the inning. Kara King led off with an outfield single, moving over on a sacrifice bunt. Poplawski drove in her third run of the game with a double before a single from Katerina Luna rounded out their scoring.
  • Walks to freshman Alyssa Bueno, junior Mariah Cepeda, and Kissinger loaded the bases for McGurk, who brought Molloy within one with a double to right center.
  • The Lions had runners on first and third in the top of the seventh inning, threatening to continue the game, but were unable to plate the tying run.
  • McGurk had a career-high four RBI in a 3-for-3 afternoon.
  • Bueno and junior Stevie Dabbadie each had two hits.
Game Two: Pace 10, Molloy 9
  • It would be Molloy's turn to strike first in the second game, putting runners on with a walk to sophomore Megan Wegel and a single from freshman Skyler Secondino. Kissinger sent the ball down the left field line to bring one run in.
  • A fielding error then plated a second run before a double steal with runners on first and third made it 3-0 in favor of the visitors in the second inning.
  • A hit by pitch, wild pitch, and single put runners on first and third in the home half of the inning with Edmond's single up the middle scoring the first run for the setters.
  • Another single up the middle, this time from Faith Scally, drove in two runs to tie the game.
  • A single from Bueno and walks to Wegel and Secondino loaded the bases for the Lions in the third, but they were not able to break the stalemate.
  • The tides changed in the fourth, with singles from redshirt sophomore Alexis Montgomery and senior Mae Savage putting runners on base. Bueno singled to right field to score both runs and give Molloy a 5-3 advantage.
  • Freshman Gabby Rocha sent a single to right field to drive in one more run before a bases-clearing triple from Secondino made it 8-3.
  • After Secondino retired the Setters in order in back to back innings, the home team broke through in the bottom of the fifth with two singles and a walk to come within four.
  • Helping her own cause, Secondino sent the ball over the left field fence to start the seventh inning off for the Lions, making it 9-4.
  • A walk followed by three-straight doubles brought Pace back within two, 9-7.
  • Despite a pitching change, the late walks continued to plague the visitors, who walked in two runs with the bases loaded to tie the game.
  • Ashley Field pushed a single through the left side of the infield for the game-winning hit for Pace.
  • Secondino drove in three runs, going 3-for-3 with a triple and home run. Montgomery also had three hits to go with a stolen base.
  • Bueno went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
