Offensive Explosion Leads Baseball Past D’Youville in Series Finale

Uniondale, N.Y. - On the back of scoring 15 combined runs in the sixth and seventh inning, the Molloy baseball team completed a four-game sweep of D'Youville, 21-6, Sunday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions improve to 29-7 overall and 20-2 in East Coast Conference play, having now won 20 in a row, marking the third program in Division II to collect a winning streak of 20 games this season.
 
How it Happened
  • D'Youville put two runs on the board in the first inning on the back of a pair of RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Saints added to their lead, 3-0, in the third after Blaise Kolbert singled home a run.
  • Molloy got a run back to cut the deficit, 3-1, in the bottom of the third after junior Charlie Imhof walked with the bases loaded to plate a run.
  • The road team wasted little time responding, adding three runs in the top of the fourth following a solo home run and a run scoring double and single to increase their lead, 6-1.
  • The Lions began to scratch and claw at the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Brian Sanchez began the frame off with a single before coming around to score following a wild pitch. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, junior Anthony Marsillo collected an infield single to plate Imhof to shrink the deficit to three, 6-3.
  • Molloy's offense broke through in the sixth, rallying for seven runs with six runs crossing the plate with two outs to flip the contest in their favor, 10-6. After junior Mike Sweeney and Sanchez led off the frame with singles, Sweeney came around to score after sophomore Steve Mulqueen singled up the middle.
  • Later in the frame with the bases loaded, junior Jack Vallario and Marsillo brought in a run each after Vallario was hit by a pitch and Marsillo drawing a five-pitch walk to tie the game at six. After D'Youville went to the bullpen, senior Sean Serrano roped a single into right field to plate a pair of runs and Sweeney capped the inning with a double down the right field line to bring in two.
  • The cardinal and white broke the game open in the seventh, adding on eight runs to take a commanding 18-6 lead. Senior Jack Coogan started the scoring with a single into left that brought in a run before Vallario drove in two with a triple into right center.
  • After Vallario scored via a wild pitch, Serrano knocked in another two with a triple before coming around to score after a Sanchez single.
  • Senior Sean Welsh topped off the inning with a two-run home run.
  • The home team added three runs in the eighth on its way to a 21-6 triumph.

  • Serrano drove in a game-high four as part of a three-hit day.
  • Sanchez led all players with four hits and four runs scored.
  • Vallario knocked in three and scored three times.
  • Sweeney and Marsillo collected two hits and two RBIs a piece.
  • Welsh connected for his 10th home run of the season as part of a three-hit day.
  • Junior Thomas Charlwood got the start, tossing 4.2 innings allowing five earned runs while striking out six.
  • Out of the bullpen, sophomore Artie Green picked up his second win of the season allowing one hit in 2.1 innings of work.
