Uniondale, N.Y. - Saturday afternoon was made for sophomore
Steve Mulqueen, as he lifted the Molloy victory to a pair of victories, 8-7 and 4-3, via two walk-off hits over the D'Youville Saints at Mitchel Field. The Lions increase their record long winning streak to 19, improving to 28-7 overall and 19-2 in East Coast Conference play, while the Saints move to 14-25 overall and 9-12 in league play.
Game One: Molloy 8, D'Youville 7
- Following a scoreless first inning, D'Youville put together a three-run top of the second on the back of a two-run single and a run scoring following an error to take a 3-0 lead.
- The Lions got one back in the bottom of the frame after senior Sean Serrano plated a run with a sacrifice fly to shrink the deficit to two, 3-1.
- The Saints added three more runs in the third following a run scoring double, single, and ground out to open their lead to five, 6-1.
- Molloy battled back in the bottom of the third, rallying for a six-run frame to jump in front, 7-6. After the inning began with three straight singles, senior Sean Welsh plated junior Jack Vallario with a sacrifice fly.
- Following the sacrifice fly, the second run of the inning scored following a throwing error on a pick off attempt before Mulqueen connected for a two-run home run that just edged the left field fence.
- Later in the inning with runners on first and second with two outs, junior Anthony Marsillo singled through the right side following an eight-pitch at bat to tie the game. The frame was capped with a run scoring following a dropped third strike wild pitch to give the home team the lead.
- Offense would come to a quick halt from the fourth through the seventh, as both pitching staffs bared down to limit the offense to just three hits combined.
- In the eighth D'Youville saw the first two runners reach base, setting the tying run at second with no outs on the board. The Saints capitalized on the opportunity as pinch-hitter Jake Ferris singled into center field to knot the contest at seven.
- The road team threatened to take the lead with runners on first and second and one out, but sophomore Dylan Schriver induced an inning ending 6-4-3 double play to keep the contest tied.
- The home team looked to walk it off in the ninth putting runners on second and third with one out on the board, but the Saints forced extra innings closing the frame with a pop out and ground out.
- In the top of the 10th, D'Youville loaded the bases with one out on the board, but out of the bullpen sophomore Jason Torres escaped the jam forcing a line out to first and a fly out.
- It didn't take long in the bottom of the frame for the Lions to clinch the victory. Junior led off the inning with a double into right center field before Welsh was intentionally walked to set the stage for Mulqueen. The sophomore would come through, lacing a double into the right field corner to plate Sanchez and clinch the victory, 8-7.
- Mulqueen connected for his sixth home run of the season as part of a four hit day and drove in three.
- Sanchez totaled four hits and two runs scored.
- Marsillo, Serrano, and Welsh drove in a run each.
- Graduate student JC Kiss started the contest, tossing six innings allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out seven.
- Out of the bullpen, Schriver pitched three innings surrendering one run on three hits.
- Torres picked up his first career victory in 0.2 innings of work, escaping the 10th inning jam.
Game Two: Molloy 4, D'Youville 3
- The Lions struck first in the bottom of the second after freshman John Franco snuck a single through the right side to plate junior Charlie Imhof to give Molloy a 1-0 lead.
- As they did in game one, D'Youville put together a three-run top of the third to jump ahead, 3-1, on the back of two singles that yielded three runs.
- The cardinal and white knotted the game in the fourth. Imhof doubled home Welsh before coming around to score after senior Jack Coogan dunked a single into center field.
- The Saints looked to take the lead back in the fifth after leading off the frame with a triple, but redshirt junior Mike Knapp would not let that happen stranding the runner on third, inducing a pop up, strikeout, and fly out to escape the inning and keep the game tied.
- The road team once again sought after the go-ahead run in the sixth, with runners on first and second after the first two batters of the inning. Once again Knapp would not back down, striking out the next two to come to the plate and ending the inning with a pop out to shut down the chance.
- In the bottom of the seventh with two outs on the board, Welsh singled through the left side and stole second to get into scoring position. Mulqueen once again would play hero, sending a line drive into center field that would bring Welsh around to score to earn the game two victory, 4-3.
- Welsh collected two hits, two runs, and a stolen base.
- Coogan, Franco, Imhof and Mulqueen tallied a hit and an RBI each.
- Senior Jeremy Taggart totaled a three-for-three afternoon.
- Knapp improved to 7-1 on the campaign, collecting his fourth complete game in his last four starts. The right-hander tied a season-high 10 strikeouts while surrendering three runs.
