Rockville Centre, N.Y.- The women's lacrosse team topped St. Thomas Aquinas this afternoon, 21-4, at the RVC Sports Complex. The Lions went on a 14-goal run while holding the Spartans scoreless in the second frame. With the win, the cardinal and white improve to 5-8 (2-2 ECC), while the Spartans drop to 2-8 (1-4 ECC).
Prior to the contest, the women's lacrosse team honored two members of its senior class in a Senior Day ceremony.
Emma Brazier (childhood education) and
Olivia Brodarick (nursing) were both recognized.
How it Happened
- Braizer opened the scoring for the Lions just three minutes into the contest.
- Sophomore Cameron Thompson, junior Brooke Grossjung, and freshman Jenna Italiano each added goals less than two minutes apart.
- Clemence Papleux connected with Jada Garcia to cut the deficit to 4-1.
- Sophomore Ava Benasutti and freshman Sam Cossaro each netted their first of the contest, while Italiano added her second to give the Lions a 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- The second quarter belonged entirely to the home team, as five different Lions found the back of the net to extend the lead to 13-1 at halftime.
- The cardinal and white continued its run into the third frame, opening with three goals from Brazier, one from Italiano, and a free-position goal from Grossjung.
- Papleux ended the Lions' 14-goal run with a tally in the final two minutes of the third quarter, then added her second five minutes into the fourth.
- Freshman Peyton Naus scored her third of the game three minutes later to make it 19-3.
- Garcia added another for the Spartans midway through the quarter.
- Brazier capped the scoring with back-to-back man-up tallies to secure the 21-4 victory.
Top Performances
- Brazier recorded a career-high seven goals for seven points on the afternoon.
- Italiano posted a career-best seven points on four goals and three assists.
- Grossjung finished with three goals and one assist, while Naus (3 goals) and Benasutti (1 goal, 2 assists) each totaled three points.
- Cossaro and Zamora each contributed a goal and an assist.
- Thompson added a goal, freshman Sarah Minelli dished out a career-high two assists, and Adamski added a helper.
- Zamora and Minelli each collected three ground balls, with Zamora also controlling six draws.
- Naus caused two turnovers.
- Junior goaltender Samantha Heuer was forced to make just two saves in net, while junior Nicole Schaumloffel added an additional save.
