Softball Falls Twice in Extras at Staten Island

Staten Island, N.Y. - It would take a combined 19 innings to determine a winner in this afternoon's softball doubleheader at the College of Staten Island, and the Dolphins would take advantage of walk-off singles in both contests to pick up two wins. After the doubleheader, Molloy sits at 7-16 on the season and 0-2 in East Coast Conference play.

Game One: CSI 6, Molloy 5 (8 innings)
  • The Molloy bats went right to work in the top of the first, scoring three runs on three hits. Senior Emily McGurk got things started with a single to right center before moving to second following a walk to sophomore Megan Wegel.
  • Sophomore Gwen Woodsit cleared the bases the following at bat with a double before freshman Ava Zicchinelli ended the opening rally with an RBI single to left center.
  • Junior Stevie Dabbadie would work out of jams with runners in scoring position in both the first and second innings, including inducing a pop out in the second with the bases loaded to keep the Dolphins off the board.
  • CSI would break through in the third inning, scoring two runs on a double from Abbie Morris before tying the game on a single from Taryn Judson.
  • Wegel doubled down the left field line in the fifth inning, advancing to third on a fielding error during Woodsit's at bat.
  • Freshman Skyler Secondino came up with a clutch pinch hit two-RBI double down the left field line to regain the lead for the Lions, 5-3.
  • A double from Jianna Lopez cut the deficit to just one for the home team in the sixth inning before a single from Milene Mendoza knotted the score in the bottom of the seventh with a double to force extras.
  • Singles from Dabbadie and Wegel put runners on for the Lions in the eighth, but they were unable to plate a run.
  • A hit by pitch and sacrifice bunt put Julia Del Masto into scoring position, scoring on an RBI single up the middle from Madilyn Paul to clinch the win for the Dolphins.
  • Wegel tallied a career-best four hits, going 4-for-4 with a double and a walk.
  • Zicchinelli (2-for-4) and redshirt sophomore Alexis Montgomery (2-for-2) each had multiple hits.
  • Woodsit and Secondino both drove in two runs.
Game Two: CSI 4, Molloy 3 (11 innings)
  • The first 16 of 17 batters were retired in order with Montgomery being the lone base runner for either team through two and a half innings.
  • Mendoza hit a solo home run down the left field line for the first hit of the game, putting the home team ahead, 1-0.
  • The Lions would score in the fifth, tying the game on a throwing error.
  • A walk and back-to-back singles would set up a sacrifice fly for Paul in the home half of the fifth to make it 2-1.
  • Sophomore Casey Kissinger led off with a double in the seventh inning, moving to third following a ground out from Montgomery. Senior Mae Savage picked up the game-tying RBI with an infield ground out, as heads up base running from Kissinger kept the game going for Molloy.
  • Secondino retired the Dolphins in order in the home half of the inning to force extra innings for the second-straight game.
  • After two scoreless innings, Secondino doubled to right field in the 10th, moving to third following a fielding error. Woodsit pushed a single to the left field grass to plate the go-ahead run for the Lions.
  • A single from Paul in the home half of the inning led to the designated player stealing second and moving to third following defensive misplays from the Lions.
  • An expected squeeze play allowed Kaylee Cary to reach second following a bunt before a single from Bridget Motley tied the contest at three and sent the game to the 11th inning.
  • Molloy managed runners on first and second in the top of the inning, but was unable to score.
  • A double from Lopez and a walk to Paul set Cary up for the game-winning walk-off single up the middle for the Dolphins.
  • Dabbadie went 3-for-5 with three doubles, tying a single-game record in the process.
  • Savage, Secondino, and Woodsit each had two hits.
