Zicchinelli, Softball Earn First Shutout in Split with Mercy

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The softball team picked up its first East Coast Conference victory of the season this afternoon, topping the Mavericks of Mercy University 5-0 from Bob Klein Field. Mercy won the second half of the doubleheader, 11-0 in five innings.

Game One: Molloy 5, Mercy 0
  • After two and a half scoreless innings, a single from sophomore Casey Kissinger and sacrifice bunt from redshirt sophomore Alexis Montgomery set up senior Mae Savage for an RBI single up the middle to plate the first run of the afternoon.
  • The Mavericks loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, but freshman pitcher Ava Zicchinelli worked out of trouble with three infield ground outs to keep Mercy off the board.
  • Singles from junior Stevie Dabbadie and sophomore Gwen Woodsit and a walk to Zicchinelli loaded the bases for the Lions in the home half of the inning. Kissinger battled pitcher Mackayla Seconda to an eight-pitch at bat before drawing a bases-loaded walk to pick up an RBI and make it 2-0.
  • Walks continued in the bottom of the fifth with both Savage and sophomore Megan Wegel reaching base. A fielder's choice to the hole between first and second from Woodsit plated one run before a sacrifice fly from freshman Skyler Secondino made it 4-0 in favor of the Lions.
  • A single and two walks loaded the bases for Molloy for the third-straight inning in the sixth. Dabbadie sent a fly ball deep enough to right field to score Kissinger, rounding out the score at 5-0.
  • A lead-off single kept hope alive for the Mavericks, but Zicchinelli retired the next three batters in order to earn the win.
  • In the effort, Zicchinelli struck out four batters and allowed no runs on seven hits in the complete game shutout, the first of her collegiate career.
  • Kissinger went 2-for-2 with two runs scored an an RBI on the afternoon.
  • Savage went 1-for-1 with three walks and an RBI.
  • Dabbadie and Woodsit both went 1-for-3 with an RBI each.

Game Two: Mercy 11, Molloy 0 (Five Innings)
  • The Mercy bats went right to work in the first inning with singles from Dylan Reyer and Averi Miller. Julianna Coluccio drove in a run with a ground out to score the Mavericks' first run of the afternoon.
  • The offense continued in the second inning, taking advantage of four hits, a wild pitch, and a hit by pitch to extend the lead to 6-0. Averi Miller drove in three runs with a bases-clearing triple as part of the run.
  • In the third inning, it would be Reyer's turn to drive in three runs with a bases-loaded triple of her own to make it 9-0. A single and a fielding error rounded out the score at 11-0.
  • Molloy's two hits came from the bats of Savage and a pinch hit single from freshman Alyssa Bueno
