Softball Drops a Pair at Wilmington

New Castle, Del. - The softball team came up just short in a doubleheader against the Wildcats of Wilmington University. The weekend ends with Molloy sitting at 6-14 on the season while Wilmington improves to 9-17.

Game One: Wilmington 6, Molloy 4
  • The Lions would be first on the board, taking advantage of a walk and defensive miscues to put seniors Mae Savage and Emily McGurk in scoring position.
  • Junior Stevie Dabbadie pushed a single through the left side to plate the first run of the contest before a sacrifice fly from sophomore Gwen Woodsit doubled the lead.
  • The Wildcats evened the score in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a two-run homer from Mia Lane.
  • Dabbadie worked out of trouble in the third inning to keep the game knotted, but Wilmington would score three runs on three hits in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.
  • Sophomore Megan Wegel hit the first home run of her career, a solo shot over the left center fence, to bring the Lions back within two in the sixth.
  • Defensive miscues on the part of the visitors allowed the Wildcats to add an insurance run in the sixth following a single from Mia Keenan.
  • Sophomore Casey Kissinger led off the top of the seventh with a double to right center field, moving just 60 feet from home following an infield single from redshirt sophomore Alexis Montgomery. A fielder's choice from Savage would make it a two-run game, 6-4, but the Wildcats would hold on for the victory.
  • Kissinger led with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. In total, six Lions would record a hit, three of which were for extra bases.
  • Savage, Wegel, Woodsit, and Dabbadie picked up RBIs.

Game Two: Wilmington 4, Molloy 1
  • After a scoreless opening two innings of play, the Wildcats broke the stalemate in the third, scoring two runs on two singles and a double.
  • Wegel would record the first hit for the Lions with a single to third base to lead off the fifth inning. Back-to-back errors from the Wilmington infield loaded the bases for freshman Ava Zicchinelli, who picked up an RBI after being hit by a pitch to cut the lead in half.
  • Two singles and a wild pitch put runners on the corners in the home half of the inning, breaking the game open to a 4-1 advantage following a single to center field from Gabriella Saucedo.
  • Molloy managed just one base runner, a walk to freshman Sklyer Secondino, through the final two innings to give Wilmington the win.
