Flushing, N.Y. – Junior
Thomas Charlwood and sophomores
Artie Green and
Jayden Patel were nearly perfect Sunday afternoon, as the trio combined to allow one hit and one run through nine innings to help the Molloy baseball team top Queens, 3-1, at Hennekens Stadium. The Lions, winners of six straight, sit at 15-7 overall and 10-2 in East Coast Conference play while the Knights move to 4-15 overall and 1-9 in league play.
How it Happened
- The Lions had a runner in scoring position in the first two innings but were unable to convert keeping the contest without a score.
- In the top of the third, junior Charlie Imhof was caught in a rundown, but senior Sean Welsh crossed the plate before Imhof was retired to get Molloy on the board, 1-0.
- Queens tied the contest at one in the bottom of the frame after a run scored following a wild pitch.
- Charlwood would allow just one base runner combined in the fourth and fifth keeping the game knotted at one.
- In the top half of the sixth, sophomore Steve Mulqueen singled and senior Sean Serrano followed with a single and advanced to second on the throw collected back-to-back to set the table with a pair of runners in scoring position.
- Junior Jack Vallario followed and plated Mulqueen and Serrano with a single into center field to give the Lions a two-run lead, 3-1.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Queens looked to catch Molloy off guard with a runner trying to steal home during an exchange between Green and catcher junior Anthony Marsillo. After Green got the ball back from Marsillo, the lefty fired it to the plate and Marsillo tagged out the runner to keep the contest, 3-1.
- The home team put together their best scoring chance of the afternoon, loading the bases in the bottom of the eighth with one out. Patel would not flinch, inducing an inning ending 6-4-3 double play to shut down the scoring chance.
- In the final frame, the Knights would put the lead off runner on following a walk and would move him to third with two outs with the tying-run at the plate, but once again Patel would close the door ending the game with a fly out to secure the 3-1 victory.
