Women's Lacrosse Falls Short Against Daemen

Rockville Centre, N.Y.- The women's lacrosse team fell 12–10 in a tightly contested match up against Daemen University this afternoon. With the loss, the Lions drop to 3-7 (0-2 ECC), while the Wildcats improve to 7-3 (2-0 ECC).

How it Happened
  • Daemen jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice within the opening two minutes.
  • Freshman Jenna Italiano found senior Emma Brazier across the crease late in the first quarter to cut the deficit to one.
  • Italiano scored early in the second quarter and later assisted on another Brazier goal, giving the Lions its first lead of the afternoon.
  • The Wildcats took advantage of a free position and a man-up opportunity to regain a one goal lead, 4-3.
  • Sophomore Ryleigh Zamora knotted the game at four with a free-position goal before Avery Castner put Daemen back in front.
  • Freshman defender Avery Adamski pushed into the offensive zone and scored her first collegiate goal. Zamora followed with a bouncing shot to take back the lead with a minute and a half left.
  • The Wildcats took advantage of a turnover and converted on a breakaway to tie the game at six right before the halftime break.
  • Sophomore Ava Benasutti opened the second half with a free position goal before Daemen responded two minutes later, finishing through traffic to level the score at seven.
  • With six and a half minutes remaining in the third, junior goaltender Samantha Heuer made a key save after a shot hit the post and a rebound chance followed, keeping the game tied.
  • Benasutti powered through the Wildcats' defense to give the Lions an 8-7 lead.
  • A quick chance in front tied the game for the Wildcats once again, but Benasutti completed her third-quarter hat trick to send the Lions into the fourth ahead 9–8.
  • Castner converted on an odd-man rush to open the fourth before Marianna Szamoskozi scored on a man-up free position shot to regain the lead.
  • Adamski netted her second goal of the game, slipping a shot past Daemen goaltender Mia Caryl to bring the Lions back within one.
  • The Wildcats responded quickly, as Camryn Day set up Maria Salvo for the go-ahead goal.
  • Sadie Schlesselman added an insurance goal in the final minutes to secure the 12–10 victory.
Top Performances
  • Benasutti (3 goals), Zamora (2 goals, 1 assist), and Italiano (1 goal, 2 assists) each recorded three points on the afternoon.
  • Brazier and Adamski added two goals apiece.
  • Heuer matched a career-best 13 saves in net.
  • Sophomore Cameron Thompson dished out an assist.
  • Zamora controlled four draws, with Benasutti controlling three.
  • Sophomore Katie Kofod caused two turnovers.
