Imhof’s Grand Slam Lifts Baseball to DH Sweep of Queens

Uniondale, N.Y. - Junior Charlie Imhof did not allow the cold and wind to affect his swing, as he totaled four hits and six RBI to help lead the Molloy baseball team to a doubleheader sweep (6-2 and 16-3) Saturday afternoon at Mitchel Field. Following the victories, the Lions improve to 14-7 overall and 9-2 in East Coast Conference play, while the Knights move to 4-14 overall and 1-8 in league play.

Game One: Molloy 6, Queens 2

  • Following two scoreless innings, the Knights cracked the scoreboard in the top of the third with an RBI single to put them in front, 1-0.

  • The Lions immediately answer in the bottom of the inning after junior Joe Burriesci led off the frame with a double; junior Brian Sanchez knotted the game at one with a ground out to score the junior.

  • Queens reclaimed the lead, 2-1, in the top of the fifth after a run scored following an error.

  • In the bottom of the seventh, the home team loaded the bases with no outs on the board. Burriesci plated a run with a sacrifice fly to bring the contest back to all-square at two.

  • Molloy look to take the lead in the frame, but Queens induced an inning ending double play to escape further damage.

  • In the eighth, the cardinal and white once again loaded the bases with no outs in search to break the contest open. Junior Charlie Imhof would be up to the task, as he would connect and belt a grand slam over the left field fence to give Molloy a four-run lead, 6-2.

  • The Knights would get a two-out base runner in the top of the ninth, but sophomore Dylan Schriver capped the game with a ground out to secure the victory.

  • Imhof collected his third home run of the season and drove in four.

  • Graduate student JC Kiss started the contest, tossing five innings allowing two runs, one earned, three hits and striking out a career-high eight.

  • Schriver picked up his first win of the season, pitching four innings of shutout relief allowing one hit and striking out a career-high six.

Game Two: Molloy 16, Queens 3

  • The bottom of the first belonged to Imhof as he accounted for all three runs in the frame. The junior ripped a triple into the right-center gap to plate two runs before scoring on a wild pitch to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.

  • The lead was short lived as the Knights tied the contest at three in the top of the second following a three-run home run by Vincent Mallon.

  • The bottom of the third saw senior Jack Coogan capitalize and represent three runs in the frame. It began when he tripled into the left-center gap to plate a pair of runs before scoring following a passed ball to reclaim the Lions' three-run lead, 6-3.

  • The home team broke the game open in the fourth, putting together a four-run inning. Sanchez began the scoring with a sacrifice fly before senior Sean Serrano unloaded and capped the inning with a three-run home run over the right-center field fence to open the lead to seven, 10-3.

  • The cardinal and white used a six-run bottom of the sixth to put a bow on the afternoon. It started when Sanchez connected for a solo home run that snuck inside the right field foul pole. Later in the inning Serrano and freshman John Franco tallied a ground-rule double each, Serrano brought in one run while Franco drove in a pair.

  • Franco came around to score following a balk before Sanchez ended the scoring with a run scoring double to cap the doubleheader sweep, 16-3.

  • Sanchez paced the offense with four hits including his first career home run while scoring three times and driving in three.

  • Serrano connected for his second home run of the season while driving in a game-high four.

  • Imhof scored three times while totaling two hits and two RBI.

  • Coogan and Franco tallied two RBIs apiece.

  • On the mound, redshirt junior Mike Knapp improved to 4-1 after tossing a complete game allowing three runs and striking out seven.
