Women’s Lacrosse Opens Conference Play at #19 Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.- In a rematch of the East Coast Conference Championship Finals, the women's lacrosse team fell to #19 Mercy 18-6 this afternoon at Mercy Field. With the loss, the Lions drop to 3-6 (0-1 ECC), and the Mavericks improve to 8-1 (2-0 ECC).
 
How it Happened
  • Mercy jumped out to an early lead, scoring three goals within the first five minutes of play.
  • Senior Emma Brazier responded two minutes later, burying a pass from freshman Peyton Naus to cut the deficit to two.
  • The Mavericks responded with a stretch of goals, closing the first quarter with five different players finding the back of the net. Ashlinn Kelly added her third goal on a free-position shot early in the second quarter to push the lead to 11-1.
  • Brazier struck again on a man-up opportunity, converting on another assist from Naus.
  • After a Mercy goal from Kayden Meyer, sophomore Ava Benasutti answered for the cardinal and white, making it 12-3.
  • The home team took advantage of two man-up opportunities to go ahead 14-3 before the halftime break. Mercy scored three more unanswered goals throughout the third quarter.
  • Benasutti broke the streak with a goal in the final three minutes of the third, then opened the fourth quarter scoring a free-position goal to make it 17-5.
  • The Lions defense held the Mavericks to just one goal in the final quarter, while Brazier completed her hat trick off a pass from sophomore Cameron Thompson to close out the scoring, 18-6.
 
Top Performances
  • Brazier and Benasutti each scored three goals.
  • Naus dished out two assists and picked up three ground balls, while Cameron added an assist.
  • Freshman Sam Cossaro controlled a career-high seven draws.
  • Junior Brooke Grossjung matched a career-best four caused turnovers.
  • Junior goalie Nicole Schaumloffel made eight saves in net.
