Strong Pitching Boosts Baseball to DH Sweep at Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball teams pitching staff surrendered just three runs on eight hits en route to a doubleheader sweep (4-2 and 3-1) over the Mercy Mavericks Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field. Following the pair of wins, the Lions improve to 11-7 overall and 6-2 in East Coast Conference play, while the Mavericks move to 11-11 overall and 5-3 in league play.

Game One: Molloy 4, Mercy 2
  • The first five innings of the contest was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel, as graduate student JC Kiss and Mercy starter Gordon Votruba tossed five shutout innings a piece.
  • Kiss tossed four no-hit innings before surrendering a hit in the bottom of the fifth, facing one above the minimum through five frames.
  • The Mavericks were able to escape three separate innings in the first five where the Lions had two runners on base en route to five shut out innings.
  • Molloy broke through in the top of the sixth after junior Charlie Imhof connected for a two-run home run to put the Lions in front, 2-0.
  • The cardinal and white added to its lead in the seventh. After a run scored following an error, sophomore Steve Mulqueen belted a home run to open the lead to four, 4-0.
  • The four-run lead was short lived, as the Mavericks were finally able to get to Kiss in the bottom of the frame. Zach Ashline blasted a two-run home run to cut the deficit in half, 4-2.
  • The home team would muster just one hit between the eighth and ninth inning as the Lions would go on to secure the victory, 4-2.
  • Junior Mike Sweeney led the offense with four hits.
  • Imhof recorded his second home run of the year and drove in two runs while Mulqueen totaled his fourth homer of the campaign.
  • Kiss improved to 4-1 on the year, tossing seven innings allowing two runs on two hits while striking out a career-high seven.
  • Sohpomore Jayden Patel collected his fourth save of the season, tossing the final two innings of shutout baseball and striking out two.
Game Two: Molloy 3, Mercy 0
  • After a scoreless first inning, freshman John Franco gave Molloy a 1-0 lead with an RBI single that scored senior Jack Coogan in the top of the second.
  • The third and fourth inning reverted back to pitching, as the two teams combined for just one base runner in the two frames.
  • The Lions capitalized for two runs in the top of the fifth to extend its lead, 3-0. Sweeney singled home senior Jeremy Taggart before coming around to score following a double from senior Sean Welsh.
  • The Mavericks began to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and second with two outs. The home team converted a third single in the frame that saw a run score, cutting the deficit to two, 3-1.
  • With the tying run on first and the winning run coming to the plate, redshirt junior Mike Knapp battled to a full count with Kolongi Goins but would win the battle, ending the contest with a ground out to finish off the 3-1 triumph.
  • Welsh topped the lineup with two hits while driving in one run.
  • Franco and Sweeney collected a hit and an RBI each.
  • Knapp improved to 3-1 on the season, tossing a complete game allowing one run on five hits and striking out five.
