Women's Lacrosse Tops Holy Family 17-4

Philadelphia, P.A. – The women's lacrosse team secured a 17-4 win over Holy Family this afternoon at Tiger Field. With the win, the Lions improve to 2-3 and the Tigers drop to 0-2.

How it Happened
  • The Lions got things started early in the opening frame with senior Emma Brazier netting the first goal of the contest. Freshman Sam Cossaro followed just one minute later, capitalizing on a man-up advantage.
  • Sophomore Cameron Thompson connected with fellow sophomore Ava Benasutti to extend Molloy's lead to 3-0 early in the game.
  • Junior goaltender Samantha Heuer denied Gwen Varley a free position shot five minutes in.
  • Freshman Jenna Italiano pushed the lead to 5-0, scoring on a man-up opportunity before adding another goal just under two minutes later.
  • Italiano completed the hat trick only 48 seconds into the second quarter, once again converting on the man-up advantage.
  • The cardinal and white kept Holy Family scoreless for the rest of the first half while tallying five additional goals from four different scorers to take an 11-0 lead into halftime.
  • Freshman Peyton Naus netted the Lions' lone goal in the third quarter.
  • Holy Family's Taina Harkins put the home team on the board with a free position goal before finishing a pass from Jamie Gugger with 17 seconds remaining in the quarter, making it 12-2 heading into the final 15 minutes.
  • Thompson recorded her second goal of the contest just 35 seconds into the fourth quarter before the Tigers responded with a goal from Julia Leibig to cut the deficit to 13-3.
  • The Lions answered with three-straight goals from Brazier, sophomore Ryleigh Zamora, and Italiano before Holy Family added its fourth goal on a man-up opportunity to bring the score to 16-4.
  • Brazier capped off the scoring with a man-down goal with under two minutes remaining, to seal a 17-4 victory for Molloy.
Top Performances
  • Brazier and Italiano each recorded a career-high four goals, and added one assist each for a career-best five points.
  • Thompson totaled a career-high five points, scoring two goals and dishing out three assists.
  • Cossaro matched a career-high four points on three goals and one assist.
  • Grossjung and Benasutti each scored once and recorded two assists.
  • Zamora and Naus each had a goal and an assist, while sophomore Shannon Stroud tallied the first assist of her career.
  • Freshaman Avery Adamski and Italiano each caused three turnovers with Adamski also picking up a game-high four ground balls.
  • Zamora led the Lions with seven draw controls.
  • Heuer made three saves in net.
  • Junior goaltender Nicole Shaumloffel added two additional saves.
