Wilmington, Del.- The #12 men's lacrosse team bested Wilmington University this afternoon 13-9, never once giving up a lead. The Lions improve to 2-1 on the season, and the Wildcats sit at 2-2.
How it Happened
- The Lions struck early with a goal from graduate student Zach Kroog off a feed from senior Brian Green, followed by goals from redshirt senior Noah Hammon and freshman Jaden Simick, both off passes from senior Jake Taylor, giving the Lions a quick 3-0 lead.
- Green then caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball, setting up Hammon's second goal of the game.
- Wilmington's Andrew Dzubak got the Wildcats on the board with a goal in the fourth minute, then added his second with just 47 seconds left in the opening frame.
- Josh Weston brought Wilmington within one early in the second quarter, making it a 4-3 contest, the closest the Wildcats would come.
- Freshman Kevin Renneisen and Green traded goals, marking Renneisen's first two collegiate goals just three minutes apart from each other, to give the Lions a 7-3 lead at halftime.
- Carter Earl opened the third quarter for Wilmington, but Green and Taylor quickly responded to extend the lead to 9-4.
- Dzubak scored his third on a man-up opportunity, but senior Justin Palulis answered with his first goal of the season with just 11 seconds left in the third.
- Both teams capitalized on turnovers early in the fourth quarter, trading goals in the first four minutes. Senior Tommy Corcoron and Palulis then scored back-to-back to stretch the lead to 13-6.
- The Wildcats scored twice on a man-up opportunity, cutting the deficit to five in the final six minutes.
- Earl netted the Wildcats' ninth goal in the closing three minutes, but the Lions' defense held firm for the 13-9 win.
