Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's basketball fell to the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College, 83-75, Wednesday evening on Bob Houlihan Court. As a result, the Lions move to 7-16 overall and 7-6 in East Coast Conference play, while the Spartans improve to 15-11 overall and 11-3 in league play.
How it Happened
- The Lions jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the first 4:05 with freshman Chase Timberlake accounting for six points.
- Over the next six minutes of action, St. Thomas Aquinas stormed to a 17-4 run to flip the momentum and the lead, 20-12, on the back of shooting 58 percent shooting from the floor and 75 percent from three.
- Molloy would come as close as six for the remainder of the first half and headed into halftime behind, 34-24.
- The Spartans remained in firm control of the contest through the 8:04 mark of the second stanza, gaining its largest lead of the night, 63-46.
- The cardinal and white began to find its stride from the field, putting together a 18-7 run that saw them shoot 86 percent from the floor over the next 3:47 of game time. The run saw four Lions find the score sheet, led by Timberlake and sophomore Dylan Kopp who netted five points apiece.
- The home team trailed, 70-64, with 3:55 remaining on the scoreboard.
- The Lions came within five three times in the final minutes of the contest including with 35 seconds to play, but the comeback attempt would fall short as the Spartans would hold on to secure the 83-75 victory.
Top Performances
- Junior Jared Weakly stuffed the stat sheet tying a team-high 16 points while dishing out a career-high nine assists and grabbing eight rebounds.
- Kopp followed Weakly with 16 points and four assists.
- Timberlake added 13 points alongside four rebounds and two steals.
- Juniors Chris Stokel and Bryce Merchant netted nine points each.
