Wingate N.C. - The softball team wrapped up the opening weekend of play with two losses at Wingate. Molloy ends the weekend with a record of 1-3 while the wins lift the Bulldogs to 6-2.
Game One: Wingate 4, Molloy 3
How it Happened
- The Molloy bats picked up where they left off yesterday, recording two hits in the first inning before getting on the board in the second. Sophomore Madeline Millman drew a walk before moving to second following a single from sophomore Casey Kissinger.
- A passed ball put two runners in scoring position, setting the table for an two-RBI single through the right side from senior Mae Savage to clear the bases.
- Zicchinelli allowed just three base runners through the first three innings to keep the home Bulldogs off the board.
- Wingate would break through in the home half of the fourth inning, taking advantage of three singles, including an RBI from Raleigh Dudley. A wild pitch in the next at bat would knot the score at two, but Zicchinelli forced two ground outs to limit the damage.
- Some smart base running aided by a Molloy error helped the Bulldogs plate two runs on two hits in the fifth to make it 4-2.
- Senior Emily McGurk brought the Lions back within one in the top of the seventh with her fourth career home run, but Molloy was unable to knot the score to keep the game going.
Top Performances
- Savage and McGurk each had two hits for the Lions. Savage drove in two runs with her single. McGurk added an RBI with the solo homer.
- Millman and Kissinger each added a hit in the effort.
- Zicchinelli allowed just two earned runs on nine hits and one strikeout.
Game Two: Wingate 10, Molloy 2 (5 Innings)
How it Happened
- Molloy would strike first for the third-straight game. Savage and McGurk continued to produce from the top of the lineup with Savage singling to right field before scoring on a double from McGurk.
- Junior Stevie Dabbadie followed with an outfield single of her own to plate McGurk and put the Lions ahead 2-0.
- The Bulldogs immediately responded with runners on first and third following a single and a double. A sacrifice fly from Sydney Patterson cut the deficit in half before Kaylee Furr's double tied the game.
- Anna Nidermaier followed with a two-run home run to make it 4-2.
- Another two-run home run would come in the fourth inning to make it 6-2.
- The Bulldogs plated four runs on two hits in the fifth inning to invoke the mercy rule and pick up the win.
