Box Score Washington, D.C. - Despite trailing by seven headed into the final two minutes of regulation, the women's basketball team rallied for a 72-66 overtime victory this evening against the University of the District of Columbia. The Lions improved to 9-14 on the season and 7-4 in East Coast Conference play while the Firebirds dropped to 8-14 (4-8 ECC).
How it Happened
- The score would be tied four times in the opening frame before an 8-0 run for the home team broke things open to a 16-10 lead.Â
- Senior Sophia Yearwood ended the quarter with a layup to end the frame and start a 6-0 run that would tie the contest at 16 following baskets from freshman Kaitlyn Paulino Rosario and senior Rosa Rizzitelli early in the second quarter.Â
- Seven-straight points from Rizzitelli would help Molloy lead briefly, but the teams would go into the locker room for the halftime break tied at 23 after a jumper from Le'Asia Todd in the final minute of the half.Â
- The contest would be tied three more times in the third quarter, including 39-39 with 2:35 on the clock.Â
- Five points from Yearwood paired with a three-pointer from Rizzitelli lifted the Loins in front, 47-41 after 30 minutes of play.
- The Firebirds would shoot nearly 54 percent from th floor in the fourth quarter, chipping away at Molloy's lead before a 13-1 run would put them ahead 59-52.Â
- In the final two minutes of regulation, freshman Sharmeela Ugbogbo, a block from sophomore Emma Poland, two steals and a layup from Rizzitelli, and a fast break three-pointer from Yearwood all contributed to forcing an overtime period.Â
- UDC would strike first in the extra frame, but five points from Yearwood would help push Molloy in front by four, 65-61.Â
- Poland would put up two more blocks in overtime while the Lions as a team went 8-of-10 from the foul line down the stretch to hold on to the lead and seal the victory.Â

- Yearwood led all scorers with a career-high 26 points, including seven in overtime that would be the difference in the contest, while adding six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
- Rizzitelli followed with 18 points and eight rebounds while putting up a game-high seven assists and five steals.Â
- Ugbogbo had a double-double with 11 points and a team-leading 14 rebounds to go with two blocks.Â
- Sophomore Jamie Davneiro dished out five assists while Poland matched a career-high three blocks.Â
