Men’s Soccer Tallies Point in 1-1 Draw Against Staten Island

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team went back and forth with the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island Wednesday afternoon, playing to a 1-1 draw at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions sit at 4-2-4 overall and 2-0-2 in East Coast Conference play, while the Dolphins move to 4-4-2 overall and 2-1-2 in league play.

How it Happened
  • Molloy looked to strike early, generating a pair of chances in the fourth minute four seconds apart. Senior Diego Cadena fired a shot from the right wing that was saved, before junior Charlie Morgan sent the rebound high.
  • Staten Island created a chance on the doorstep in the eighth minute. Peterson Larose sent in a cross into the six-yard box and connected with Dylan Meadows who fired a shot that would go high.
  • In the 30th minute, sophomore Jack Veletanga had his free kick blocked by the wall before graduate student Matt Star's rebound was denied by Staten Island goalkeeper Carlos Romero Astacio.
  • With 1:20 to go in the first half, graduate student Jack Hynes put in a cross inside the box and found Veletanga who tapped it in to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
  • The cardinal and white held the Dolphins without a shot in the first half heading into halftime.
  • The Dolphins found the equalizer 7:30 into the second half, after a shot from Emmauel Kambouris on the left side found the back of the net.
  • The Lions nearly reclaimed the lead in the 63rd minute. Freshman Mael Pierre Paul split a defender on the right side and fired a shot that would skid just past the far post.
  • The 70th minute saw the visitors create a quality chance when Alfie Chalmers fired a blistering shot, forcing junior goalkeeper Callum Hunt to deflect it over the bar.
  • Staten Island put together their best scoring chance of the afternoon in the 86th minute. Larose snuck through the Lions back line and fired a shot from point blank range, but Hunt made a diving save to his right to keep the contest even.
  • The final chance of the game came in the last seconds when freshman Massimo Fargnoli lined up a shot from the right side of the 18-yard box, but his attempt would sail high, ending the contest in a 1-1 draw.
