Rockville Centre, NY - The volleyball team secured its first conference win of the season this morning, sweeping Roberts Wesleyan, 3-0. With the victory, the Lions improve to 6-9 overall and 1-1 in ECC play, while the Redhawks fall to 2-13 (0-2 ECC).
How it Happened
- The Lions came out firing in the opening set, using a 10-1 run to take an early lead. Freshman Peyton Douglas, sophomore Haven Trechter, and junior Isabella Rios each recorded a kill during the stretch, while Rios added a service ace.
- Back-to-back aces from freshman Olivia Smith, along with kills from Trechter, Rios, and freshmen Kailie Girard and Gracie Hahn, extended Molloy's advantage to 19-5.
- Girard, Rios, and senior Erin Stanley helped the Lions reach set point, 24-7, before two kills and a service ace sparked a late Roberts Wesleyan run. The Redhawks' comeback attempt fell short, however, as an attacking error gave Molloy the first set, 25-10.
- The second set proved to be more competitive, with the lead changing hands four times before Roberts Wesleyan used an eight-point run, including three service aces from Breanna Hard, to take a 13-8 advantage.
- The cardinal and white responded by battling back to tie the set at 16-16 before taking the lead on a service ace and kill from Douglas.
- The Redhawks answered to even the score at 22-22, but a kill from Girard followed by two from Stanley gave the Lions a 25-23 victory and a 2-0 match lead.
- Molloy carried its momentum into the third set, putting together two lengthy scoring runs. A nine-point run featured three kills from Trechter, two from Stanley, and a service ace from Douglas. Another eight-point run pushed the Lions ahead 20-4, putting the match firmly in their control.
- A kill from Girard, followed by three Roberts Wesleyan attacking errors, provided the final four points Molloy needed to complete the sweep.
